Murça can be explored through a variety of themes, from the prehistoric Porca de Murça and historic buildings to a circular trail along the Tinhela and regional dishes. This offers points of interest both for culture enthusiasts and for travellers interested in the landscape, river and local cuisine.

Heritage and history in Murça

The Porca de Murça is a zoomorphic stone sculpture from prehistoric times and a distinctive symbol of the town of Murça. Its animal form and great age make it a striking introduction to the area’s early history.

Another testament to the town’s history is the Capela da Misericórdia de Murça, built in 1692. It is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público, or a building of public interest. The Igreja Matriz de Murça also houses a 16th-century triptych by Pedro de França.

The Pelourinho de Murça also reflects the town’s historical standing: it was included in the first Portuguese decree of 1910 classifying older buildings as national monuments. The Manueline pillory dates from the reign of D. Manuel I; the same king granted the town a new charter in 1512.

The Roman history of the area is linked to a major road that ran through Murça, connecting Astorga with the mouth of the Douro and crossing the Tinhela. The Ponte e Calçada Romana site can be reached from the EN15 at the entrance to the town: a road branches off to the right from there.

Crasto de Palheiros, also known as Fragada do Castro, is a prehistoric stone monument in the Terra Quente region of Trás-os-Montes. Between 2900 and 2300 BC, the site was transformed into a monument covering 2.5 hectares. In Valongo de Milhais, in the municipality of Murça, the Casa Museu “Soldado Milhões” opened on 10 April 2023. Its open exhibition area features photographs, multimedia elements and objects, including originals and replicas, that offer a glimpse into the soldier’s era.

Circular trail and nature along the Tinhela

The Trilho dos Passadiços do Tinhela circular trail starts and ends at the Porta de Entrada de Murça in the Parque Natural Regional do Vale do Tua. It crosses the town of Murça towards the Tinhela River. The Passadiços do Tinhela provide access from Murça to the river. The route through the town and access to the river are practical points of reference for anyone wishing to explore Murça on foot.

The Parque Natural Regional do Vale do Tua includes Murça on the right bank of the Tua River. One of the steepest sections of the Tua Valley lies at the mouth of the Tinhela. This ecologically distinctive setting is home to 23 rare or endemic species of moss and lichen.

The Microrreserva do Rio Tinhela provides favourable conditions for riverbank and river birds. These include nightingales, warblers, kingfishers (Alcedo atthis) and grey wagtails (Motacilla cinerea). The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus), a small mammal with protected status, is also particularly common in the micro-reserve. Alongside its connection to the trail, this information highlights the river landscape’s distinct ecological dimension.

Regional cuisine and products

Traditional Murça sweets include Queijadas and Toucinho do Céu. Both are made with chila, almonds and egg yolks. The tradition of convent sweets is kept alive today by Maria José, a granddaughter of D. Serafina Alves. Alongside the historic buildings, these inherited recipes offer another way to experience the local culture.

Murça’s cuisine also includes oven-roasted kid goat, served with small potatoes and oven-baked rice. Local products include olive oil, wine, honey and cheese. The Adega Cooperativa de Murça is based in the town of Murça and produces DOC Douro wines under the “Caves de Murça” brand. Together, the dishes, sweets and products represent a regional cuisine distinct from the town’s historic and landscape-related attractions.
