Oura is a particularly interesting destination for visitors who want to include trails and sacred buildings in their plans. The Caminho Português do Interior enters the municipality of Chaves through the parish of Oura. The short “Trilho Ribeira de Oura” circular trail also runs through part of this parish. This brings two different routes into focus: a pilgrimage route connected to the municipality and a short circular trail through Oura. When looking for a hotel for a trip to Oura, you can first decide which of these routes interests you more.

Pilgrimage Route and Turning for Oura

The first few kilometres of the Caminho Português do Interior run downhill alongside Estrada Nacional 2 on the left bank. This is followed by a short climb and the turning for Oura. For navigation, the key is this sequence: first the stretch along the national road, then the uphill path to the turning. The Caminho can be identified by its route and the transition into Oura; by contrast, the PR1 – Trilho Ribeira de Oura can be distinguished by its own start and end points and other route features.

The PR1 Circular Trail and Its Landmarks

The short circular trail is called “Trilho Ribeira de Oura”; its route designation is PR1 – Trilho Ribeira de Oura. The trail starts and ends beside the headquarters of Associação Vidagustermas, where the information board is also located. On the way towards Vila Verde de Oura, the route crosses the Ribeira de Oura over a medieval bridge. It also follows the former railway line between Chaves and Régua, known as the Linha do Corgo, as far as the village of Oura.

These route features provide different landmarks: the information board is at the start and end point, the medieval bridge is on the stretch towards Vila Verde de Oura, and the former railway line is associated with the Linha do Corgo. This makes it possible to identify the PR1 by its named stops and its historic railway route. Together with the Caminho Português do Interior, it offers a different route option when planning a stay focused on the trails in Oura.

Connections to Santiago and Architectural Heritage

The Igreja Matriz de Oura is located on the section of the Caminho Português do Interior that passes through Oura. Santiago is its patron saint. The Cruzeiro de Nossa Senhora da Piedade is also connected to the apostle and is listed along the route as a tourist attraction. In Oura, you can therefore encounter the connection to Santiago through both the church and the Cruzeiro.

The Igreja Matriz features Baroque lines. Its stained-glass windows were made by the artist and painter João Vieira. The church can therefore be identified both by its architectural design and by the artistic attribution of its windows. Another named building is the Capela de São Frutuoso: it is a chapel with the code OUR-13. The pilgrimage route, circular trail, church and chapel thus offer different points of interest for planning your trip to Oura.
