On the banks of the Douro, Peso da Régua brings together a long history of winegrowing, railway heritage and traces of Roman times. Wine has been produced in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro for more than 2,000 years, including the famous Port wine. The history of Peso da Régua is closely linked to the Região Vinícola Demarcada e Regulamentada, the world’s oldest demarcated and regulated wine region. The municipality of Peso da Régua also lies within the classified Alto Douro Vinhateiro area.

Winegrowing and the Douro landscape

Several wineries in Peso da Régua offer wine tastings and guided tours. The connection between winegrowing and the cultural landscape is also evident in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro: its monumental natural setting in the Douro Valley is framed by steep, barren and rugged slopes. At the same time, the landscape tells the story of the continuous adaptation of the land to Mediterranean agriculture. Visitors interested in wine will encounter both a long tradition of cultivation and a landscape shaped by people.

On the riverbank, the Zona Ribeirinha offers another perspective on the surroundings, where visitors can observe the local flora and fauna. It is a fitting choice for a stay that includes not only wine and architectural history but also nature along the Douro.

Museums, buildings and Roman traces

The Museu do Douro is housed in the 18th-century Casa da Companhia. Its permanent exhibition is titled “Douro: Matéria e Espírito”. As of 31 August 2026, all public and exhibition areas are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Facilities include a lift, adapted sanitary facilities and a wheelchair.

The Casa do Douro also brings together the history of winegrowing and architecture. It was founded in 1932 as the trade union association of Douro winegrowers. The headquarters building dates from 1944, has a polished granite exterior façade and was designed by Portuguese architect José Porto. Inside is a stained-glass window by painter Lino António.

There are 23 Pombaline boundary markers in Peso da Régua, marking out the Douro area for the production of fortified wine. The first is in the Museu do Douro, and another is in the Casa do Douro building. The Igreja Matriz do Peso da Régua houses a panel painting by Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho depicting the Last Supper. Among the surviving documents and contracts for the church’s construction work up to 1786 is a contract dated 18 November 1737.

The Alto da Fonte do Milho archaeological site, also known as Castellum Romano, is a Roman fort situated on a spur above the Douro Valley. It covers about one hectare and has been classified as a National Monument since the 1950s. The Roman villa shows signs of occupation from the 1st century AD to Late Antiquity, dated to the 4th or 5th century AD. Its defensive system includes two schist walls. Another Roman trace can be found at Monte de São Leonardo, the site of a Roman fort.

Railway history and viewpoints

The railway station and warehouse in Peso da Régua were built in the last quarter of the 19th century. On 14 July 1879, the first train officially arrived at the station. The Cais da Estação Ferroviária do Peso da Régua has a curved shape; the wooden warehouse is 200 metres long and 60 metres wide. These dimensions give the historic station area a distinctive architectural profile.

For a scenic road trip, the EN 222 to Pinhão starts in Peso da Régua.
