Ribeira De Pena lies in a transition zone between Minho and Trás-os-Montes and is part of the Região Demarcada dos Vinhos Verdes. Rivers, hiking trails and places with a distinctive cultural history offer different ways to explore the region. You can plan your trip around the landscape, archaeological traces or local traditions.

Rivers, Landscape and Activities

Several rivers cross Ribeira de Pena and provide good conditions for fishing. The Cai d'Alto waterfall lies on the Rio Póio, between Alvadia and Cabriz. It is 60 metres high and is one of Portugal's tallest waterfalls. The Rio Póio is also used for activities such as canyoning; check conditions and providers before taking part. The Ponte de Rolos on the same river serves as a river swimming spot.

Another natural landmark is the Ribeira de Pena Environmental Park: this protected area is at Bucheiro, at the entrance to the Vila de Ribeira de Pena. At Pena Aventura Park, leisure activities and adventure sports take centre stage in a natural setting. Its main activity is the Fantasticable, where participants glide from one mountain to another on a cable.

Hiking Trails Through Varied Landscapes

The Caminho do Abade starts in the centre of Ribeira de Pena and ends at the Igreja Matriz de Santo Aleixo de Além Tâmega. The trail follows old cobbled paths to Friúme and passes the Ponte de Arame, which crosses the Rio Tâmega. The Levada de Santo Aleixo is in the Freguesia Santo Aleixo de Além Tâmega; it descends through the Bragadas leisure and camping parks to the Rio Beça. The Vale do Póio trail, in turn, focuses on the river of the same name: it follows the Rio Póio through a natural amphitheatre with meadows. These specific trail descriptions can help you choose based on the places and landscapes that interest you most.

Archaeology, Houses and Crafts

The Castro da Cerva, also known as Monte do Castelo, is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público, a protected site of public interest. At the Eira de Lamelas archaeological site, you can see rock carvings featuring lines, dotted grid patterns and concentric circles.

Camilo Castelo Branco lived in Friúme during part of his youth. The Casa de Camilo houses a permanent exhibition that reconstructs the rooms of Camilo and Joaquina. In Limões, the Museu do Linho is located in the historic centre, in the headquarters building of the local weaving group. There, looms, fibres and stories invite you to learn more about flax. The traditional craft of flax weaving is particularly associated with Cerva and Limões.

Cultural heritage is also part of the local landscape: the medieval bridges of Alvite are classified as National Monuments. In Favais, opposite the Santa Luzia chapel, stands the Pedra de Favais, a sculpture of three angels. Local tradition also includes the Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Guia, held on 15 August at the height of Fonte do Mouro.

Local Cuisine and Getting There

Casa da Terra promotes local products, gastronomy, crafts and the cultural identity of Ribeira de Pena. Typical dishes include roast kid goat, Maronesa veal, cabbage with beans, rich and simple Milhos dishes, and trout from the Rio Beça. This selection offers a culinary sense of the local products and traditions that can feature in your trip.

Daily local bus services run from the bus stations in Vila Real or Guimarães directly to the centre of Ribeira de Pena and to the Vila de Cerva. Check the timetable before you leave. From Porto, the road route follows the A4 and then the A7 to the Ribeira de Pena exit. The tourist office is located in the Museu Escola and provides information about local cultural heritage, sights and available activities.

When choosing a hotel location, you can compare your planned visits with the specific places: the Caminho do Abade starts in the centre, the Levada is in Santo Aleixo de Além Tâmega, and the Museu do Linho is in Limões.
