At the Miradouro de Sabrosa, the view stretches across the Pinhão Valley and the terraced cultural landscape of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro. Schist walls are among the visible features of this landscape. Sabrosa is one of the municipalities included in the classified Alto Douro Vinhateiro area. From the Miradouro da Beijoca, the panorama extends across the Douro, vineyards and terraces of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The Miradouro de S. Domingos de Provesende offers a panoramic view south towards the Douro. The Miradouro Torguiano de São Cristóvão do Douro draws the eye to the Douro terraces and the confluence of the Pinhão and Douro rivers. The viewpoints offer different perspectives: the valley and vineyard terraces sit alongside a southern view of the river and a view of the confluence.

Wine, gastronomy and tradition

The annual Feira do Vinho e do Azeite is a traditional event featuring typical cuisine, wine, olive oil, handicrafts and local products. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the current dates in advance. The Lagarada Tradicional in Celeirós do Douro offers a specific connection to the grape harvest: it brings the traditions of harvesting in old granite lagares to life and combines them with gastronomy and regional products. The two events therefore highlight different aspects of the region’s food and wine culture: a broad selection of wine, olive oil and handicrafts at one, and grape-harvesting traditions at the other.

Quinta do Crasto also offers wine programmes that can be tailored individually and may include lunch or dinner. Douro boat trips are optional; access to the farm shop is also included in the offer. The programmes are available by prior reservation and confirmation. If you plan to take advantage of this offer, check the booking conditions again before your trip.

Historic places in Sabrosa

Sabrosa is considered the birthplace of Fernão de Magalhães, the 15th-century Portuguese navigator who was the first to circumnavigate the world. The Castro de Sabrosa, also known as Castelo dos Mouros, is an Iron Age fortified settlement and has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público since 1970. In Provesende, Casa dos Belezas has the same classification. Many manor houses in Sabrosa date from the 18th-century development of the Douro wine region. These historical references therefore span very different periods: the Iron Age settlement and the later manor houses from the period when the wine region was developing.

Hiking trails and planning your time

The PR6 “Rota Urbana de Fernão de Magalhães” is a 2.9 km circular urban hiking trail. It connects several places associated with the history of Sabrosa and Fernão de Magalhães. The Trilho do Castro de Sabrosa is 6.8 km long, as is the Trilho de Provesende/ Cais da Foz do rio Pinhão. In comparison, the PR6 is the shorter route; its description also specifies that it is an urban circular trail. Before setting out on the two 6.8 km trails, check the current trail markers.

The address of the Posto de Turismo – Sabrosa is Câmara Municipal, Rua do Loreto, 5060-382 Sabrosa. As visitor addresses can change, check it before your trip.
