Sabrosa combines a fortified settlement with buildings from different periods and the cultural landscape of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro. The town is also located in the demarcated Port wine region. When looking for a hotel, your travel interests can help guide your choice: are landscape, archaeology or architecture your main focus? Sabrosa offers several clearly distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.

Landscape Around Sabrosa

The Miradouro de Sabrosa overlooks the Pinhão River valley and offers a view of the characteristic, evolving and vibrant cultural landscape of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro. This includes different types of terraces, plateaus, schist walls and other distinctive features. The view thus connects the river valley with a landscape whose forms are part of the cultural heritage described here. If you are making landscape the focus of your trip, the Miradouro offers a concrete point of reference for this part of Sabrosa.

Archaeology and History

The Castro de Sabrosa is a fortified settlement that was first occupied in the Iron Age and remained in use until the Middle Ages. Its defensive system consisted of three rows of walls made of hewn stone, as well as a double ditch. The ditch strengthened the western and northern sides of the areas that were particularly vulnerable. The walls and ditch are therefore both part of the description of the fortification; the account of its long period of use also places the Castro across several historical periods.

The exhibition “Os Locais e Culturas da Viagem de Magalhães” offers another perspective on history and culture. It presents the cultural diversity of the countries reached by the expedition commanded by Fernão de Magalhães. While the Castro illustrates the history of a fortified settlement across a long period, the exhibition focuses on the cultures connected with the voyage. Together, these topics highlight different aspects of Sabrosa’s historical heritage.

Buildings from Different Periods

The Igreja Matriz de Sabrosa dates from the 18th century and was built in the Baroque style. Its history is linked to a chapel that belonged to the Casa de Fernão Magalhães and was demolished in the 17th century. According to tradition, the church was built on the site of that chapel; however, it is not certain whether the chapel actually stood there. The former chapel is also mentioned in Fernão de Magalhães’ will, which he wrote before his voyage to circumnavigate the world.

The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is located at the Casa da Capela and was built before 1542. The Casa da Capela comprises a manor house, an estate and other properties. The chapel can therefore be considered alongside the other parts of the property. The Casa da Comba offers a different architectural feature: perched on a large granite block is the most imposing coat of arms among the manor houses in the Vila. The buildings mentioned here are distinguished by different features: the Baroque style of the Igreja Matriz, the early construction date of the chapel at the Casa da Capela, and the coat of arms of the Casa da Comba.

Walking and Trip Planning

The “Trilho do Castro de Sabrosa” is a 6.8 km linear walking trail with a stated duration of 2 hours. The distance and time estimate give you two concrete reference points for planning; check local conditions before setting out. The “Trilhos de Sabrosa” project also created four walking trails of the “short route” type. The project envisaged a walking tourism support centre in the former primary school in Paços. The planned site is centrally located at the entrance to Vila de Sabrosa. For your trip planning, this means there is a named route with a distance and time estimate, as well as project information about the four short routes created.
