Cinfães: River Landscapes, Walking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Cinfães
Cinfães can be explored through several themes: the Natura 2000 landscapes of Montemuro and Rio Paiva, the Vale do Bestança, trails through different parts of the municipality, and churches with distinct historical and architectural influences. You can shape your stay around nature, outdoor activities or culture.
River Valleys and Protected Landscapes
The municipality includes the Natura 2000 protected area SIC PTCON0025 Serra de Montemuro, approved by Council of Ministers Resolution No. 142/97 of 28 August. The Natura 2000 site SIC PTCON0059 Rio Paiva also lies within the municipality; it was approved by Council of Ministers Resolution No. 76/2000 of 5 July. The Vale do Bestança is also part of the Natura 2000 network.
The Vale do Bestança lies entirely within the Município de Cinfães and stretches for about 15 kilometres from southeast to northwest. Its catchment area is home to more than 800 species of vascular plants. From the Miradouro de Teixeirô in the Freguesia de Cinfães, you can look out towards the mouth of the Bestança and the Douro. The Observatório da Natureza de Marcelim is in Marcelim, in the Município de Cinfães and the Serra do Montemuro. Check access conditions before travelling there.
Compare Walking Trails and Routes
The PR 1 CNF – Caminho do Prado is a 6.7-kilometre circular route that starts and finishes in Vila de Muros in Tendais. By contrast, the PR 2 CNF – Rota do Vale is a linear route between Vila de Muros in Tendais and the Portas do Montemuro. The Rota do Vale passes through the Vale de Bestança and along the Bestança River. The two trails therefore differ both in their format and in where they lead.
The PR 6 CNF – Caminho da Vila is also linear, with endpoints at the tourist office in Cinfães and the Vale de Bestança Interpretation Centre. The Cinfães section of the GR60 – Grande Rota das Montanhas Mágicas runs from Escamarão on the Douro to the traditional village of Gralheira in the Serra do Montemuro. These endpoints help you identify the route each trail follows.
For a cycling trip, the Centro de BTT Montemuro 41 is another option. This circular route is 9.7 kilometres long and starts and finishes at the Centro de BTT da Gralheira. When planning, you can compare the two circular routes, PR 1 CNF and BTT Montemuro 41, by their stated lengths; one is listed as a walking trail, the other as a mountain biking route.
Churches and Cultural History
The Igreja de São João Baptista de Cinfães dates from the 18th century. Two granite sarcophagi can be seen in its side chapel. The Igreja de São Cristóvão de Nogueira belongs to the late style of so-called Resistance Romanesque. To visit using the Rota do Românico booking form, you must book at least 24 hours in advance, or 48 hours ahead for Sunday visits. Check the booking information before planning your visit.
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Natividade de Escamarão follows the architectural forms of so-called rural Gothic and has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público since 1950. The Igreja de Santa Maria Maior de Tarouquela offers another historical perspective: it is the surviving part of a Benedictine convent that existed until the 16th century. Together, the churches illustrate different architectural styles and historical contexts.
Serpa Pinto Discoveries includes an interactive museum dedicated to the life of Serpa Pinto, as well as an interpretation area for traditional arts and crafts, ethnography and folklore. The Centro Interpretativo da Gralheira serves as a museum and hosts activities related to maize cultivation. Confirm the centre's visiting arrangements in advance.
Experience Nature and Discover Regional Cuisine
The Parque Botânico e Fluvial Temático do Rio Paiva brings together visitor experiences, environmental education and the protection of biodiversity. Nature and its interpretation go hand in hand there. If you would like to include regional flavours in your travel plans, Cinfães' culinary traditions feature Arouquesa beef, butter pastries known as Matulos, and preserves. These specialities describe the region's cuisine; no specific tasting venue is implied.
