Discover Nelas: Wine, Culture and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Nelas
Between Dão wine, literary traces and routes along the rivers, Nelas offers several starting points for planning a trip. Local history and landscape sit side by side: a route with 14 stops leads through Nelas, while Santar adds its own architectural touch with garden terraces and granite architecture. Wine and regional cuisine complement the focus on culture and nature.
Wine Region, Festival and Cuisine
The municipality of Nelas lies at the heart of the Dão wine region and is part of the Rota dos Vinhos do Dão. Every year, the Câmara Municipal de Nelas holds the Feira do Vinho do Dão; the festival has been running for more than a quarter of a century and welcomes thousands of visitors. The programme includes wine tastings, live cooking demonstrations for adults and children, and regional products such as Serra cheese, bread, honey and cured meats. Exact dates vary from one edition to the next—check the event dates for your travel period.
Traditional Nelas cuisine includes Coelho à Mirra, Arroz de Carqueja, Bacalhau, Pato à Moda da Beira, boiled Entrecosto with beans and leafy greens, Cabrito and Sopa de Peixe do Rio. These dishes offer a distinctive culinary way to experience the region, alongside its wine and festival programme.
Gardens and History
A continuous succession of garden terraces shapes Santar. These include Casa dos Condes de Santar e Magalhães, Casa da Magnólia, Jardim da Igreja da Misericórdia, Jardim dos Linhares, Casa Ibérico Nogueira and Casa das Fidalgas. The sequence of houses and gardens brings landscaped green spaces together with the built history of the village. In Santar’s streets lined with granite houses and its grand, carefully designed urban ensemble, the village’s ancient roots remain visible.
In Nelas itself, literature and architecture are also intertwined. The present-day town hall, the Paços do Concelho, was originally a residence of the Novais family and was probably built in the early 19th century. The António Lobo Antunes Literary Route begins and ends in the garden of the Nelas City Library – António Lobo Antunes. Its 14 stops combine readings of excerpts with architectural heritage and local stories; the route also draws on the writer’s memories of Nelas from the mid-20th century.
The Estátua do Escanção in Nelas was unveiled in 1966 and was inspired by the figure of Escanção Fernando Ferramentas. It is considered the world’s first monument to an escanção, or sommelier. For a different glimpse into the past, the Orca de Pramelas leads to a small megalithic dolmen: its polygonal chamber has a stone-slab floor and a short symbolic corridor.
River Landscapes and Walking Routes
The municipality lies on the Beirão Plateau between the Serra da Estrela and the Serra do Caramulo. The Mondego and Dão run parallel, forming deeply cut valleys that the terrain slopes towards. Nelas lies on the right bank of the Mondego and the left bank of the Dão. The Circuito Pedestre das Caldas da Felgueira follows rural paths through the landscape around the thermal spa and along the banks of the Mondego.
The mineral waters of the Termas das Caldas da Felgueira have been used since the 19th century to treat respiratory, musculoskeletal and skin conditions. If you are considering the mineral waters for health reasons, consult a medical professional about their suitability.
Festivals and Getting There
At the Nelas Carnival, costumes and floats created by the Bairro da Igreja and Cimo do Povo associations parade through the streets. Hundreds of revellers take part, music accompanies the procession, and thousands of visitors attend. The details of individual programmes may vary.
The municipality of Nelas can be reached via the A25 and IP3 motorways, as well as the national road network. Nelas is also home to a railway station on the international Beira Alta railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check the latest services before setting off.
