Resende: Romanesque Architecture, Douro and Serra de Montemuro
Accommodation in Resende
At an altitude of about 1,000 metres, the traditional two-arched Ponte da Panchorra connects the banks of the Cabrum. Resende combines landmarks like these with trails in the Serra de Montemuro, activities along the Douro and experiences centred on cherries. For your hotel stay, you can shape your trip around culture, hiking, river scenery or cherry culture.
Romanesque Buildings and Museums
Four buildings in Resende are part of the Rota do Românico: the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Cárquere, the Igreja de São Martinho de Mouros, the Igreja de Santa Maria de Barrô and the Ponte da Panchorra. At the Church of São Martinho de Mouros, 13th-century Romanesque architecture meets an unusually designed façade. Inside are paintings from the workshop of the Mestres de Ferreirim, a main altar in the national style and a hagiographic ceiling. The Church of Santa Maria de Barrô is late Romanesque and lies on the left bank of the Douro. Its foundation may date back to the 12th century.
The Museu Municipal de Resende also combines local history with a range of themes: it is housed in the former prison building and has four permanent exhibition rooms. They focus on archaeology, ethnography, the Douro, and Edgar Cardoso and his bridges over the Douro. The Centro Interpretativo de Montemuro presents the natural and built heritage of the Serra de Montemuro. Together, these institutions add further cultural highlights alongside the religious buildings.
Hiking Trails and Scenery in the Montemuro
The Serra de Montemuro is part of Portugal’s Natura 2000 network and includes active peat bogs. It is also one of the last refuges south of the Douro for the endangered wolf. The Grande Rota de Montemuro runs for 57 kilometres through the Serra; its 13.9-kilometre variant leads to Resende. The route passes Lagoa D. João and Porto de Rei on the banks of the Douro. The longer route through the mountains and the shorter variant ending in Resende can therefore be distinguished by their length and course.
Another hiking project covers an 80-kilometre route from Nespereira (Cinfães) to Parque Fluvial de Porto de Rei (Resende). Three hiking trails are also signposted in the municipality of Resende: PR de Felgueiras, PR do Vale do Cabrum superior and PR da Lagoa D. João. The Rota dos Cerejais offers a different kind of route: this circular trail starts and ends in Senhora da Guia. It passes through rural slopes above the Douro, which are covered with white blossoms during cherry blossom season.
There is also a dedicated offer for cycling trips. The Centro Cyclin’Portugal de Montemuro includes nine circular routes with 122 signposted kilometres and 302 kilometres available. Its main starting point in Resende is in Felgueiras, with another starting point in Feirão. The trails in the Montemuro can thus offer a different focus for an active trip alongside the hiking routes.
The Douro and Its Waterways
Large tourist vessels, including cruise ships and hotel boats, can dock at the Cais Turístico-Fluvial de Caldas de Aregos. The facility also includes a marina with space for 100 recreational boats. Caldas de Aregos is accessible by road, rail and water. If you arrive on the Douro railway line, you can get off at Aregos station and cross to Resende on the Barca de Aregos. Check the ferry timetable before travelling.
Parque Fluvial de Porto de Rei brings together several riverside facilities, including a river beach, a swimming pool, a landing stage for tourist boats, a footbridge, walking paths, parking, gardens and picnic facilities. Facilities may vary by season. The park’s restaurant serves escabeche river fish and eels; it may also operate seasonally. Along the Douro, you can choose from activities on the water as well as places for a walk or a picnic.
Cherry Culture and Local Experiences
The Centro Interpretativo da Cereja combines a permanent exhibition with an orchard where several varieties of cherry grow. From there, you can enjoy views of the Serra do Marão and the Douro. The Rota das Cerejeiras em Flor offers a different focus: along this route, a specialist explains the cherry’s growth cycle to visitors. The exhibition, orchard and expert explanation each offer a distinct way to explore cherry culture.
At Quinta da Massôrra, visitor activities include walks, wine tastings, tastings of local products and taking part in some agricultural activities. If you would like to take part in agricultural activities, arrange this with the farm. Together with the circular trail through the cherry-growing slopes, the theme of cherries offers both a scenic and a culinary way to experience Resende.
