Ribeiradio offers several specific points to consider when planning a trip: linear hiking trails, viewpoints and cultural landmarks. If you are planning a stay, you can first decide whether to focus on a longer hike, views of rivers and the reservoir, or local history. The destinations described differ not only in subject matter, but also in whether they involve a trail, a viewpoint or a tradition.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The Trilho do Vouga is a linear hiking trail about 27 kilometres long that can begin in Ribeiradio, next to the riverside swing. Its linear route and approximate length are important details for planning. Small streams run alongside the trail; the Cancela and Putes Abutres waterfalls are located in its final kilometres. Take extra care when crossing the streams during heavy rain. Bear this in mind when planning your hike.

A municipal route description dated 29 April 2024 assigns Parque Ambiental de Pedre a supporting role for the Trilho do Vouga between Sejães and Ribeiradio. The park is beside the reservoir at the Barragem de Ribeiradio. Both a specific trail route and the reservoir are therefore among the area’s landscape highlights.

The Ribeiradio–Oliveira de Frades section is part of the Ecopista do Vouga, a linear hiking trail. Its landscape is shaped by the Maciço da Gralheira and the waters of the Vouga. The Associação Trilhos do Ladário maintains trails in the Serra do Ladário for mountain biking and trail running. The outdoor activities on offer thus include both hiking trails and trails associated with these two sports.

Viewpoints Overlooking Rivers and the Reservoir

The Baloiço da Serra is located at one of the highest points in the Serra do Ladário and offers panoramic views of the Vouga and Teixeira rivers. The Miradouro de Nossa Senhora Dolorosa is on Monte de Cadafaz in the parish of Ribeiradio. From there, the view stretches across the Vouga valley, the Ribeiradio reservoir and the Lafões region. The two rivers are the main features in view from the Baloiço; the Miradouro also takes in the valley, reservoir and region.

Cultural History and Pilgrimage

One of the Casas do Brasileiro is located at Quinta da Boavista in Galegas, Ribeiradio. The house is connected with emigrants who went to Brazil in the 19th century, made their fortunes there and later returned to their homeland. The houses feature, among other things, roofs with triangular gables and palm trees. This subject therefore brings together architectural features and a history of emigration and return.

The Santuário da Nossa Senhora Dolorosa in Ribeiradio is the setting for one of the region’s oldest pilgrimages. Thousands of people gather for this tradition; it is not associated with a current event date. Ribeiradio therefore offers different focal points for your trip: a linear hike with streams and waterfalls, views of the Vouga and the reservoir, and a history of architecture and pilgrimage.
