The place name is a useful starting point when looking for a hotel for your stay; its different historical associations can help you choose a focus for your trip.

Torre de Ferreira de Aves: defensive architecture

The Torre de Ferreira de Aves, also known as Torre do Paço de Lamas, is located at Quinta do Paço near the village of Lamas and is classified as a “Property of Public Interest.” The two-storey granite building dates from the late 13th or early 14th century and was originally primarily defensive. Its ground plan is square, and it stands about nine metres high. Narrow Gothic twin loopholes are set into all four facades; the original complex also included a moat that could be flooded. Together, the ground plan, openings and moat make its defensive character clear as a specific architectural feature.

Igreja de Lamas and religious tradition

The Igreja de Lamas adds sacred history to the architectural focus. Nossa Senhora da Graça is venerated in the church, and Santo Amaro is its patron saint. In 2025, the Igreja de Lamas marked the 50th anniversary of its dedication for worship and the consecration of its altar. The anniversary provides a specific point of reference in time; the veneration and patronage also convey the church’s religious character. For trip planning, this focus is clearly distinct from the defensive architecture of the Torre.

Orca do Tanque: the dolmen’s structure

Orca do Tanque is a dolmen with a polygonal chamber, nine supporting stones and a six-metre-long passage. The surrounding burial mound originally measured about 25 metres in diameter and two metres in height. The polygonal chamber has multiple sides; the supporting stones and passage describe other parts of the structure. The burial mound adds an external form to the architectural description. Its diameter and height are two different measurements that make its original extent easier to picture.

Cultural themes for your trip

The places offer clear distinctions when choosing a cultural focus: the Torre combines its dating to the late 13th or early 14th century with defensive architecture; the church represents dedication and veneration; and at Orca do Tanque, the chamber, passage and burial mound offer a glimpse into megalithic construction. This can help you decide whether architectural history, sacred tradition or megalithic culture matters most for your stay.
