When planning a trip to Chirivel, you can focus on three themes: nature around Sabina Albar and the La Sabina trail, historic buildings and archaeological sites, and local music and cuisine. This can help you decide which aspects matter most for your stay.

Sabina Albar Natural Monument and La Sabina Trail

The Sabina Albar natural monument is located in Chirivel. It is part of the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park and the Sierra María-Los Vélez ZEC and ZEPA protected areas. The tree is a specimen of the species Juniperus thurifera. In the province of Almería, it is unique in terms of its size and estimated age of 600 to 1,000 years.

The La Sabina trail begins near Cortijada del Mojonar in Chirivel and offers the opportunity to observe three species of juniper in the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park: sabina mora, sabina albar and sabina rastrera. The linear route is listed as 9.768 kilometres each way, takes five hours and has a moderate difficulty level. Local trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

The route leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Chirivel Corridor, a historic route between the Levante and Andalusia, as well as the Sierra de las Estancias and the Filabres. This means the hike can be considered not only in terms of distance and time: the landscape visible from the viewpoint is also one of the route’s described highlights.

Archaeological Sites and Buildings

The Roman site of El Villar was traversed by the Via Augusta, which connected Cartagena and Cádiz. El Villar is believed to have consisted of a group of Roman villas. Finds there include a statue from the 2nd century BC, a geometric mosaic, a storage silo and domestic rooms. El Villar is designated an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of archaeological zone.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Isidoro was built in the late 19th century in a blend of Neoclassical and historicist styles. It has three naves and a tower attached to its north side. The church also contains a painting attributed to Luis Tristán, who is considered a pupil of El Greco. The building’s design and the painting offer different ways to explore the links between architecture and art history.

The Casa del Minero was built in 1906 as an Art Deco modernist residence commissioned by a mine owner from Cartagena. Its described features include decorated walls, ceilings and doors, as well as a wrought-iron staircase. Another trace of the past is the remains of the Nasrid-era fortress of Velad Al-Ahmar on Cerro del CastellĂłn.

Music, Festivals and Cuisine

At the patron saint festival in honour of San Isidoro, songs from the Rosario de la Aurora are sung in the penultimate week of August. The music is carried through the town’s streets at dawn. The Cuadrillas de ánimas perform as musical groups at major festivals, preferably at Christmas. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates in advance.

Signature dishes in Chirivel’s cuisine include Potaje de trigo, Asado de cabezas and Migas. Traditional sweets also offer a distinctive culinary insight: these include pastries of Arab origin, Gachas, Tortas de la Virgen, Roscos de naranja, Roscos chiri and Barquillos. Together with the musical traditions, these dishes reveal a different side of the town from its archaeological and architectural heritage.
