Discover Costacabana through its beach, sections of the GR-92 and the history of its tourist development. If you are looking for a hotel in Costacabana, you can first consider whether swimming conditions, a section of the trail or the character of the town is especially important for your trip. These perspectives lead to different details: from the beach facilities to the landscape along the GR-92 and the town’s street names and houses.

Beach and swimming conditions

The beach at Costacabana has moderate wave action and windy swimming conditions. These two details complement one another: wave action concerns the water, while wind describes another beach condition. Facilities include toilets, showers and foot-washing stations, as well as waste bins, a cleaning service, a telephone and a sports area. The facilities therefore combine sanitary amenities with practical services at the beach. If you are planning a beach day, you can consider the information about swimming conditions and available facilities separately, and take both into account.

Two sections of the GR-92

The GR-92 can be divided here into two sections. From AlmerĂa to Costacabana, the trail follows Paseo de la Ribera and reaches the beginning of Paseo MarĂtimo de Costacabana. The section from Costacabana to Playa Amoladeras starts at the eastern end of Paseo MarĂtimo de Costacabana in the UrbanizaciĂłn Algaida. For most of its length, it passes through extensive open areas parallel to the coast, into a dune area and past archaeological remains of a Roman almadraba (tuna trap). The references to the promenade indicate different points: the section from AlmerĂa reaches its beginning, while the section to Playa Amoladeras starts at its eastern end. The landscapes described also differ: one features promenades along the route, while the other passes through open coastal areas and dunes and by the archaeological remains. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

History and local character

Costacabana was established in the 1970s as a tourism-promotion project initiated by Karl Josef Hanflend. The project attracted British and German investors. Many streets still have their original English names, while most houses are single-storey. The street names and houses reveal different aspects of the neighbourhood: the English names shape its linguistic character, while the single-storey houses define its built form. These local features thus add concrete impressions of Costacabana to the history of its tourist development. For travellers interested in the character of the place, they offer a different perspective from the beach and the GR-92.
