Nijar can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: architectural history, traditional crafts, the history of water management and a described hiking route. If you are planning a stay, you can first consider which of these themes interests you most.

Church, Fortress and the Atalaya Quarter

The parish church of Santa MarĂa de la AnunciaciĂłn was built in the 16th century at the behest of Bishop Antonio Corrionero. It has a defensive function and retains its original clock. The Atalaya de NĂjar is another example of older architecture: it dates from 1574 and is the only surviving above-ground element of the former Arab fortress. The Atalaya quarter is also one of the areas of NĂjar where Arab origins are particularly evident.

The viewpoint at Atalaya offers expansive panoramic views of the Villa de NĂjar and Cabo de Gata. The Mirador de la Atalaya de NĂjar is within walking distance of the center of the Villa de NĂjar. The church, fortress and quarter provide a focus on cultural history, while the viewpoint adds views of the landscape.

Craftsmanship as Part of Local History

The Villa de Níjar was officially declared a Zona de Interés Artesanal on February 18, 2026. The designation recognizes the historical and cultural importance of its craft activities. The zone includes seven workshops producing pottery and ceramics, flat-loom textiles known as jarapas, and wind instruments made from pita wood.

Jarapas, pottery and esparto processing are also part of Níjar’s traditional craft identity. The Museo La Casa de Los Artesanos is dedicated to these deeply rooted traditions and to the heritage of pottery, hand-painted ceramics and jarapa weaving. Different materials and areas of craftsmanship are represented: ceramic work, textile traditions and the processing of esparto. For culturally curious travelers, these crafts offer a distinct way to explore the town’s history, alongside its buildings and historic quarters.

Water and Change in Campo de NĂjar

In the old town of the Villa de Níjar, the Museo del Agua is a municipal cultural center. It explores the importance of water and its management over time in the arid Campo de Níjar. Its information panels cover the history of Níjar’s first inhabitants, the Alumbres de Rodalquilar, the Hispano-Muslim period, livestock farming and dryland agriculture, the Isabel II reservoir, colonization settlements, and modern desalination techniques. These topics range from early settlement and economic practices to today’s technological approaches to water production.

Viewpoints and Hiking Trail

There are two landscape observatories on Cerro de la Atalaya, established after a path and its surroundings were upgraded. The Junta de AndalucĂa announced their inauguration on December 11, 2024. Together with the Mirador at Atalaya, which is within walking distance of the center, they make landscape views another of the experiences described in NĂjar.

The S15 Sendero de los Molinos–Huebro GR-140 is a linear hiking trail of moderate difficulty. It is 2.55 kilometers long and ends in Níjar. The route passes through a lush ravine with orchards and watermills to a viewpoint; the area is recognized as a Paisaje de Interés Cultural de Andalucía. Along the trail are the remains of more than 22 watermills associated with grain milling. The route therefore combines landscape with a tangible reminder of the former use of water power in agriculture.

For planning purposes, the Mirador and the S15 are different: the viewpoint is within walking distance of the center of the Villa de Níjar, while the Sendero is a linear hike of a specified length and moderate difficulty that ends in Níjar. If you are looking for hotels in Nijar, this comparison can help you choose whether to focus your stay on the town’s history and architecture, its crafts or its hiking landscape.
