Oria offers several distinct highlights to consider when planning a trip: historic buildings, local customs and the landscape of the Sierra de Oria. If you choose a destination based on its cultural and natural features, you can weigh these aspects against one another. Oria’s historical landmarks range from religious buildings dating back several centuries to a testament to the era of the Marquisate of Los Vélez. The Sierra de Oria adds nature and a specifically named mountain biking stage to the picture.

Historic Buildings and Their Periods of Construction

The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is a late Baroque church with a cruciform floor plan and three naves. Construction began on 16 March 1767 and ended on 13 May 1779. The floor plan describes the overall shape of the complex, while the three naves divide the church interior. A mural by Pedro Cervantes, dating from 1960, is located in the main altar area. In 1999, the Basílica in Oria was protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

The two hermitages add further historical context. The Ermita Vieja was built in the 16th century on the remains of an earlier mosque; the Ermita de San Gregorio dates from the 17th century and is distinguished by its Mudéjar style. Another landmark is the Casa de la Tercia: it dates from the 18th century and is a testament to the period when Oria belonged to the Marquisate of Los Vélez. Religious buildings from different centuries and a historical testament to the marquisate thus offer different perspectives on the history of the town.

The grounds of the Alcazaba are also among the historic landmarks. They have been renovated, access has been improved and a viewpoint has been built.

Local History, Traditions and Products

The Fuente de la Polaca represents another aspect of local history: for centuries, it was a traditional meeting place where women from Oria and the surrounding area collected water, washed clothes and rested. San Blas is still celebrated with a mass, a procession and the blessing of the rosco pastries typical of Oria. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, check the exact dates for your travel period.

Local products are also part of the traditions described here. Confitería La Polaca was founded in 1875 and makes traditional confectionery and baked goods mainly by hand. If you are looking for a specific product, check its availability before your visit. Since 1969, Productos Cárnicos El Parrita has been making hams and sausages in Oria as artisanal products, using traditional family recipes. Here too, check availability before planning your visit.

The Sierra de Oria and the Mountain Biking Stage

The municipality of Oria includes a rugged, contrasting natural landscape in the Sierra de Oria, with great biodiversity and numerous geological formations. Its biodiversity and geological features offer two different perspectives on this landscape. For more specific route guidance, there is the Chirivel–Oria mountain biking stage: it leads into the Sierra de Oria and ends in the town of Oria. This brings together an overview of the municipality’s natural landscape and a clearly named route stage.
