Bornos: Discover Cultural Heritage and Trails
Accommodation in Bornos
Bornos combines a protected historic ensemble with a variety of trails and a protected wetland landscape. This offers several specific ways to plan your trip: architectural history in the town, a trail along an unfinished railway line, or routes with religious and landscape-related significance. Seasonal cuisine is also part of the local character.
Cultural Heritage and Architecture in Bornos
The Conjunto Histórico de Bornos is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. One of its defining buildings is the Palacio de los Ribera – Castillo del Fontanar: the remains of the former Fontanar castle are combined here with a late Gothic palace dating from the 16th century. The castle-palace is open to visitors and preserves remains of the walls and the Torre del Homenaje from its earlier Arab construction phase. The upper floor houses Bornos’s historical and tourist interpretation centre. If you plan to visit, check the latest visitor information in advance.
The estate includes the Jardín Renacentista del Castillo Palacio de los Ribera. Its restoration brought back the central pool, stone stairways, tree-lined paths and an artificial grotto. These garden features offer a different spatial perspective on the palace: alongside the walls and tower, you can also take in the garden’s design as part of the historic ensemble.
Another example of the town’s architecture is the Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Its façade is defined by a triangular neoclassical pediment with four attached columns. The bell tower is 31 metres high and was built in 1792. The history of the Convento del Corpus Christi dates back to its inauguration as a convent in 1597. The building has two storeys and an arcaded courtyard lined with round arches; stone and brick form its structure. A staircase with an intricately carved stone balustrade adds a distinctive design feature.
Wetland and Trails
The Cola del embalse de Bornos is designated as a Paraje Natural: as a natural area since 1989, a Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA) since 2002, and a Zona Especial de Conservación (ZEC) ES6120002 since 2015. It is also a nesting and wintering area for numerous protected bird species and is home to a significant heron colony. These two functions point to different seasonal roles: nesting sites and wintering grounds describe the importance of the wetland landscape to birds.
The Vía Verde de Bornos runs along the unfinished Jerez–Almargen railway line and passes through Bornos and Coto de Bornos. It is suitable for walking and cycling; the Puente de los 21 Ojos is a photo spot along the route. The route description gives Bornos’s landing stage as the starting point, accessible from the town centre via Avenida de la Diputación. This route therefore combines a former railway line with a clearly identified starting point and a distinctive bridge as a landmark.
The Way of the Cross route has a different focus: it begins at Plaza de San Francisco and follows the old Way of the Cross from the Convento de San Bernardino to Calvary Hill. It is described as an easy route lasting one to two hours; check the stated duration and access locally. This makes it easier to estimate the time needed for this route than for a trail whose duration is not specified here.
The Dam Trail leads from the islet to the Bornos Dam and passes through tunnels and rocky gorges. The trail through the Sierra offers a view of the Sierra de San Cristóbal from a viewpoint on the road known as Carretera Vieja. These two descriptions highlight different landscape features: tunnels and gorges are part of the Dam Trail, while the defining feature of the Sierra trail is its viewpoint overlooking the Sierra. Routes and conditions may change; check the latest local information before setting off.
Seasonal Cuisine
During the vineyard snail season, numerous snail dishes are prepared in Bornos. Many are showcased each year at the Feria del Caracol; dates vary. If you would like to include this culinary highlight in your travel plans, check the festival dates for your preferred period.
