Costa Ballena between beach and dunes
Accommodation in Costa Ballena
Playa de la Ballena borders the Costa Ballena holiday complex. When looking for a hotel in Costa Ballena, you can focus on different things, such as the beach, golf, or walking and cycling routes. The specific differences can be seen in the beach access points, route lengths and golf course formats.
Beach and dunes
You can reach Playa de la Ballena via wooden stairways that lead through the dunes. At the beach access points, wooden walkways make it easier for people with reduced mobility to reach the dry sand. Changes to beach management may affect access in the future. The dune system is bordered by landscaped areas belonging to the surrounding residential developments.
Playa de la Ballena has toilets, showers, a tourist information office, a sports area and a children's play area. Facilities may change seasonally or following infrastructure works. The bathing waters are moderately calm; conditions on site may vary depending on the season.
Golf by the beach
Costa Ballena Ocean Golf Club has 27 championship holes and a nine-hole par-3 course. The course is flat, and some holes run parallel to the beach. The number of holes distinguishes the two course formats; individual holes may change following a redesign.
Coastal paths and cycle route
To give you an idea of the distances, there is a 2.8 km coastal path along dunes and palm trees, as well as an approximately 25 km circular cycle route starting from Costa Ballena. The length and design of the coastal path may change as a result of future works. The Sendero litoral de Rota at La Ballena runs along wooden walkways.
The cycle route starts in Costa Ballena and connects the Sendero del Corredor Verde Litoral with the VĂa Verde. After the cycle path near Chipiona harbour, it leads back to Costa Ballena through fields and pine forests. The loop is considered easy and has only slight changes in elevation; route conditions may change. The VĂa Verde follows a former railway line between El Puerto de Santa MarĂa and SanlĂșcar, passing through Rota and Chipiona.
Getting around
Costa Ballena has numerous cycle paths and dedicated bicycle parking areas in squares, parks, public buildings, at beach access points and at shops. This infrastructure may change due to public works. Municipal bus route 3 connects Rota with Costa Ballena and runs along the main streets of the holiday complex. As routes may change, check the current route before travelling.
Water sports and park
A sailing school with its own boat launching and landing area is located at the Nuevo Oasis access point. Check on site whether it is open seasonally. Windsurfing, sailing, surfing and kitesurfing are highlighted water sports here; beach use rules may vary depending on the season.
A large urban park in Costa Ballena is located just a few metres from the dunes and beach. A large lake in a coastal urban park is home to various birds, predominantly ducks. The birdlife may naturally vary.
