Recreation Area and Getting There
The El Bujeo recreation area has picnic tables, barbecue areas and parking. Its facilities also include a spring with untreated water of excellent quality. Before you travel, check local information about the water and use of the fire pits.
A forest track leads from the N-340 to the recreation area. The turn-off is just past the Algeciras youth hostel, on the drive from Algeciras towards Tarifa. Check road and trail conditions before setting out. The area lies within the municipality of Tarifa, in a large eucalyptus plantation; holm oaks and cork oaks grow along its outer edges.
Landscape and Birdwatching
The El Cabrito observation point is elevated in the Sierra del Cabrito and offers views across the Strait of Gibraltar to Jebel Musa in Morocco. It is used to observe the seasonal migration of soaring birds across the strait. The higher sections of the RĂo GuadalmesĂ trail also offer views of the Strait of Gibraltar and opportunities to observe both migratory and resident birds. Visibility may vary with the weather.
The vegetation along the trails varies: the El Cabrito–Puerto del Bujeo trail passes through typical Mediterranean scrub with young cork oaks, reaching lusher vegetation by the streams. Along the Puerto del Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro trail, streams are bordered by Algerian oaks, cork oaks, rhododendrons and ferns.
Hiking Trails by Length and Walking Time
The El Cabrito–Puerto del Bujeo linear trail starts at the recreation area. It is 9 km long, with a stated walking time of four hours and a low difficulty level. By comparison, the RĂo GuadalmesĂ trail is described as a 7 km circular route of moderate difficulty, with a walking time of about three hours. The start and finish are at the turn-off to the recreation area at kilometre 95 of the N-340. The route passes through ravines with typical rainforest flora and offers views of the sea and the GuadalmesĂ Tower.
Another linear route is the Puerto del Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro trail. Its one-way length is 22.004 km; it is rated as moderately difficult, with a stated walking time of three hours. The trail begins at the turn-off at kilometre 95 of the N-340, between El Pelayo and El Cuartón, where the El Bujeo recreation area is also located.
Current Trail Information
As of August 26, 2026, the RĂo GuadalmesĂ trail was temporarily closed. Check its status again before your hike. The El Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro cycling route is also closed to public use: the closure has been in effect since December 29, 2025, because of landslides caused by heavy rain. Before setting out, check the latest notice on the official visitor portal.
The Montes de Tarifa cycling route is 27.340 km long, linear and of moderate difficulty; the ride takes about three hours. It can also start at the El Bujeo recreation area at kilometre 95 of the N-340. The route offers views of the Sierra del Bujeo and the African coast and heads towards the Sierra, on whose southern slope the RĂo GuadalmesĂ lies. The official website also warns of landslide risks and a temporary closure. Check this notice before your trip.
