Palmones: River Landscape, Nature and History
Accommodation in Palmones
Palmones brings together river landscapes, marshland and local history. Playa de Palmones lies on the left bank of the Palmones River. Its range of themes includes birdwatching, water activities and local history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Palmones, these themes can help guide your trip planning: nature watching, paddling, fishing, local festivals and historical topics each offer a different point of interest.
Marshland and Birdwatching
The Marismas del RĂo Palmones include a dune chain just under a kilometre long, a marsh crossed by numerous channels and tidal pools, and a waterlogged area with remnants of a marsh that was once drained. The different areas combine dunes, waterways and wetland in a varied landscape.
More than 350 bird species have been recorded in the Marismas. A tourism description from 2017 mentions an ornithological observation point in Palmones where visitors can set up telescopes for birdwatching. Check current access and facilities before your visit.
Activities on the River
The Palmones River and its estuary are suitable for canoeing and kayaking. The estuary is also considered a suitable place for stand-up paddleboarding. Equipment and guided options may vary; if needed, check in advance what is available for your visit.
The lower reaches of the river attract many anglers. If you’d like to include fishing in your trip plans, check the applicable fishing conditions and regulations separately. This gives you a choice of different river activities: paddling or fishing.
Church, Tower and Local History
The Iglesia Pura y Limpia de Palmones was built on 16 March 1870. The church houses an image of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of Palmones and sailors. The celebrations for the Virgen del Carmen traditionally include a boat procession on the river. If you’re planning a trip for the celebrations, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.
Construction of the Torre de Entre RĂos was ordered in 1588 as a watchtower between the Guadarranque and Palmones rivers. The tower is surrounded by a park with gardens named after it. It is protected under the general declaration of the decree of 22 April 1949 and by Law 16/1985 on Spanish historical heritage.
Traces of early settlement also form part of the area’s history: Roman pottery fragments found in the former salt pans of Palmones bear witness to this. The Battle of the Palmones River took place on 12 December 1343. Along with the church and the tower, these references add different historical periods to the story of the area.
