Torreguadiaro: Beach, Lagoon and Watchtowers
Accommodation in Torreguadiaro
Putting Torreguadiaro in context for your trip
The key is deciding whether you want to focus mainly on time at the beach, a natural area, local history or outdoor walks.
Beach and sea
Playa de Torreguadiaro is about 1.5 kilometres long and is known for its dark sand and calm water. You can reach the beach on foot or by car from Torreguadiaro or Puerto Sotogrande. Water sports equipment is available to rent at the beach. This visitor service may vary by season; check whether rentals are currently available before your visit.
The lagoon as a natural area
Laguna de Torreguadiaro is a two-hectare natural area between Puerto Sotogrande and the centre of Torreguadiaro. It was once an arm of the RĂo Guadiaro estuary; during the 20th century, natural and artificial changes separated it from the estuary. Several boardwalks allow visitors to explore and walk through the wetland. The visitor route also includes information panels and a birdwatching station. Visitor facilities require maintenance; check their condition before your visit. If you are choosing between the beach and the natural area, the beach is all about sand and water, while the lagoon offers boardwalks and a birdwatching station in the wetland.
Fishing settlement and coastal watchtowers
The present-day settlement of Torreguadiaro grew around a fishing settlement whose residents came from the coast of Málaga and Campo de Gibraltar. The Torre quebrada de Guadiaro, also known as Torre caĂda de Guadiaro and Torre de Punta Mala, is part of the coast’s history. It is a listed BIC monument. Another landmark is Torre Nueva, a 16th-century coastal watchtower. It was built to replace the nearby Torre CaĂda or Torre Quebrada after the older tower was damaged by lightning. Torre Nueva was intended to provide refuge for local herders, travellers and woodcutters. The two towers therefore represent different aspects of history: Torre quebrada, known by several names, and the later replacement, built to serve as a refuge.
Walks along the Paseo MarĂtimo
You can walk outdoors along the Paseo MarĂtimo, watch sunsets and take in the profile of the Rock of Gibraltar. There is a calisthenics park, a health and exercise park, and a children’s park. The layout of public spaces and individual facilities may change; if you are interested in a particular park, check its current condition beforehand. Alongside the beach and nature, the promenade offers another way to spend time outdoors.
