Alcaracejos brings together sacred architecture, local traditions, and natural landscapes. Highlights range from a preserved Gothic-Mudéjar portal and a stage of the Mozarabic Way to birdwatching opportunities and a municipal thermal spa. To plan your trip, it helps to decide what interests you most: Would you like to explore architectural heritage, learn about a local tradition, or focus on nature and routes? The following places and topics offer some specific points of reference.

Architecture and sacred sites

The preserved Gothic-Mudéjar portal of a former church building can be found at the Parroquia de San Andrés. Another feature shapes the façades of traditional houses in Alcaracejos: the granite lintels above their doorways. The townscape thus brings together two distinct architectural motifs—a portal from a former sacred building and a recurring detail of its homes.

The Ermita de la Magdalena is located within the municipal cemetery and houses a carved figure of Santa María Magdalena. The Ermita de San Sebastián, in turn, stands beside a viewpoint overlooking Alcaracejos and its surroundings. The two chapels are therefore associated with different settings: one is distinguished by its location within the cemetery, the other by its proximity to the viewpoint. Together with the portal and the granite details, they offer several ways to explore architecture and sacred art.

Local customs and cultural traditions

The traditional house façades also provide a backdrop for the Auto Sacramental de los Coloquios de la Infancia de Jesús. The local community organizes this theatrical performance, whose subject is Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. The religious pageant is thus set against the town’s characteristic façades. If you would like to include the performance in your travel plans, it is best to check the dates.

Another cultural event is the Fiesta de la Matanza, held every February. Traditional butchering practices involving Iberian pigs are reenacted, and the various stages of a traditional slaughter are demonstrated; dances and regional folklore accompany the program. The Museo de la Matanza permanently displays old equipment associated with the culinary traditions of Los Pedroches. The museum, the fiesta, and the theatrical performance each offer a different way in: through historic equipment, a tradition held in February, or an organized stage production.

Landscapes and routes

The landscape of Alcaracejos Mozárabe includes Mediterranean woodland, dehesa landscapes, mountain olive groves, and areas interspersed with maquis. Birdwatching opportunities are also linked to a specific landscape: between the Sierra and Alcaracejos, a varied mosaic of habitats offers opportunities to observe birds. The landscape is therefore not defined by a single feature, but brings together a variety of natural environments.

The Mozarabic Way to Santiago de Compostela passes through the municipal areas of Villaharta, Pozoblanco, Espiel, and Alcaracejos. One stage of the route is 37 kilometers long. The Ruta Alcaracejos-Hinojosa del Duque is a separate route that starts at Plaza de los Pedroches in Alcaracejos. This gives you two different points of reference for planning: the Camino has a stated stage length, while the Ruta has a specific starting point.

Centro Termal Los Pedroches

Centro Termal Los Pedroches is housed in a former grain silo dating from the 1960s, which was converted into a municipal thermal spa. The converted silo complex has swimming pools, baths, Turkish baths, and saunas; before you travel, check which of these thermal facilities are currently available. This allows you to take the building’s special history and the described thermal facilities into account separately when planning your trip.
