Almodóvar Del Río offers several starting points for a trip: the castle on Cerro de la Floresta, historic buildings, collections and connections to the Guadalquivir. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether architecture, archaeological and agricultural history, or the landscape will be your main focus. The places below differ in subject matter—from the fortress and a historic walking tour to archaeological objects and a collection about agriculture.

Castle, Walking Tour and Architectural History

The Castillo de Almodóvar was built by the Arabs in 740 on Cerro de la Floresta. Its architecture includes nine towers, among them the Torre del Homenaje. Both self-guided and guided visits are possible. This allows you to plan your visit independently or with a guide, without limiting the historical context to a single tower.

The Ruta del Casco Histórico is a walking tour of historic civic and religious buildings, as well as notable streets and squares. It also leads to the Exposición Arqueológica Municipal. The route takes more than 30 minutes; check the practical details before your trip. Another stop on the town’s historical route is the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. The present-day chapel is probably dated to the 18th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, it served as a school; after a final renovation in 1975, it took on its present appearance. Its Baroque portal combines a straight lintel and a broken pediment with a niche flanked by volutes, three pinnacles and a bell gable.

Museums and Collections

The Exposición Arqueológica Municipal covers the period from antiquity to the Islamic era. Objects on display include Iberian votive offerings, amphora handles with stamps, Terra Sigillata, Roman coins and Andalusian pottery. The exhibition also includes a reconstructed Neolithic hut. Its broad time span and diverse groups of objects give its archaeological focus a different emphasis from the architectural history of the fortress and the Ermita.

The Museo Etnológico focuses on agriculture and livestock farming in Almodóvar Del Río and the province of Córdoba. The collection, continuously assembled since 1970, comprises more than 4,000 exhibits. Its historical periods include the 13th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries; it also explores mechanisation and the Industrial Revolution. This offers a way to explore local and provincial history through agricultural themes rather than focusing exclusively on buildings or archaeological finds.

Another exhibition brings together sewing machines and bullfighting posters. It displays nearly 200 sewing machines; the oldest dates from 1860. There are also more than 500 posters dating from 1887 to 1970. The two collections have different chronological emphases: the oldest sewing machine is the reference point for that collection, while the posters span several decades.

The Guadalquivir and the Landscape

On the banks of the Guadalquivir are the remains of a former landing place known as the Portus Romano, possibly of Roman origin. The site was recovered and restored for tourism, its access routes were improved, and it can be reached on foot. The former landing place thus provides a distinct historical connection to the river, alongside the fortress and museum collections.

Protected areas offer another perspective on the region. The ZEC Río Guadalquivir-Tramo Medio includes Almodóvar Del Río and covers approximately 2,549 hectares. The Sierra of Almodóvar Del Río is incorporated into the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Hornachuelos. If you would like to take the region’s natural features into account when choosing the focus of your trip, these details complement the historical sites.
