Añora between dehesa, festivals and history
Accommodation in Añora
Añora combines local history and festival traditions with a landscape that can be explored by bike. If you’re looking for a hotel in Añora, these different themes offer ideas for what to focus on during your stay: architectural heritage and local customs, or the dehesa and its trails.
Culture and historic townscapes
The Museo de Añora displays more than 740 exhibits on everyday life, traditional festivals and Añora’s archaeological past. The Puente de la Dehesa also tells a story of several construction phases: it has Roman origins and was rebuilt in the 18th century.
A distinctive feature of traditional architecture is the “fachadas de tiras”: on white limewashed walls, granite lines trace the structure of the houses. In the heart of Añora stands the Parroquia de San Sebastián, a representative landmark of the municipality’s historical and spiritual heritage. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña dates from the 18th century and stands at Añora’s highest point. The Ermita de San Pedro, in turn, reflects the vernacular architecture of the Los Pedroches region through its use of stone and traditional materials.
Festivals throughout the year
La Candelaria is celebrated on 2 February with large bonfires. Children and young people collect wood for several days beforehand. On Easter Monday, locally known as Día de los Hornazos, tradition calls for a picnic outdoors and sweet pastries with a boiled egg. San Martín, on 11 November, is associated with dinner among friends and pranks involving gachas.
On the first weekend in May, Añora opens its streets, courtyards and homes as part of an old community tradition. This includes crosses in streets, squares and courtyards, as well as crosses in houses that open to the public for the occasion. By day, Añora can be explored like an open-air museum; in the evening, there is traditional music and typical dishes shared together. The exact programme and participating locations may vary from year to year.
Dehesa landscape and cycling routes
The dehesa around Añora combines traditional livestock farming, including the raising of Iberian pigs, with holm oaks, Portuguese oaks, rockroses, broom, lavender and rosemary. Traditional uses of the holm oaks also included making a very fine charcoal called “picón”, suitable for braziers.
The Ruta de La Dehesa de la Vera is 13.8 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and entirely rideable by bike. It starts about 100 metres from the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña. After turning onto the Camino del Molino del Cubo, the first few kilometres pass through the Berrocoso and Cucadero landscape areas. Along the way, the route passes an old FEVE railway bridge over the Guadarramilla and goes through a landscape of holm oaks, abundant birdlife and livestock farms.
For a shorter route rated easy, choose the 6.5-kilometre Ruta de Las Encinas Centenarias or the 7-kilometre Ruta del Pozo de la Torre; both are entirely rideable by bike. The moderately difficult Ruta del Tejar de Santa Cruz and Ruta de La Losilla are each 7.7 kilometres long and also entirely rideable. This makes it easy to compare the stated distances and difficulty levels. Route details may change; check them before setting out.
The Ruta del Pozo de la Torre offers views of the Paraje del Torrequillo, an area associated with gathering wild asparagus. An old brickworks stands beside a stream on the Ruta del Tejar de Santa Cruz. On the Ruta de La Losilla, you can take a short detour to see archaeological remains about 300 metres beyond the junction with the Camino de Dos Torres. The route also invites you to end your circuit at the restored Tejar de Abajo.
Nature and regional cuisine
Wildlife around Añora includes black kites, bee-eaters, tits, storks and scops owls, as well as hedgehogs, hares and wild boar. About six kilometres from Añora, Parque San Martín lies on Cerro del Cuerno at an altitude of 704 metres. The park serves as a natural viewpoint overlooking much of the Comarca Los Pedroches. The comarca hosts the Jornadas Ornitológicas each year, with observation routes for identifying bird species, including in Parque San Martín and nearby areas of ecological value; the programme also includes demonstrations of scientific bird ringing. At the Añora Bikend, more than 200 pairs of cyclists meet in Parque San Martín in late October or early November for a cycling event; exact dates may vary.
Añora’s cuisine features dishes made with Iberian pork, produce from family gardens and pastries traditionally served for particular festivals and celebrations.
