Carcabuey brings together natural landscapes, hiking trails and a rich historical heritage. The municipality lies within the protected Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park. If you want to plan a stay that combines outdoor activities with the history of the town, there are several themes to build your days around: trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, birdwatching, and traces of several historical periods.

Experience Nature and Compare Hiking Trails

The Parque OrnitolĂłgico is free to access year-round. Its observation centre has five viewing stations, one-way mirror glass, feeding stations and supporting materials. Along the route, signs with QR codes that let you listen to bird calls add to the experience; a natural pond helps promote biodiversity in the area. Although access is free year-round, it is advisable to check the latest access and booking arrangements before your trip.

The three circular trails differ in length, difficulty and—for two of the routes—approximate walking time. The easy Sendero Puente Califal is about 7.3 kilometres long and takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. The moderately difficult Sendero de la Fuente Dura covers about 9.9 kilometres and takes approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes. Also moderately difficult is the Sendero de la Luca: a circular route about 7.8 kilometres long that starts at Calle San Marcos in Carcabuey. This gives you the option of comparing an easier, shorter loop with a longer, moderately difficult hike; the Luca falls between them in distance and starts at an address in town. Check trail details locally before setting off, as route information may change.

History at Cerro del Castillo

Carcabuey Castle stands on a rocky outcrop above the town, Cerro del Castillo. Archaeological remains on the hill provide evidence of human settlement in every historical period, dating back at least to the Middle Bronze Age. Throughout its history, the castle served as a strategically and militarily important site for controlling routes through the Subbética, including connections between five Andalusian provinces.

Two churches also offer a glimpse into the history and character of the town. The Iglesia de la AsunciĂłn stands at the foot of Cerro del Castillo on an elevated site with views over the entire town. The Iglesia de San Marcos was probably built in the last years of the 16th century; an entry in the marriage register from 1594 indicates that it was already in existence at that time. The seven colour-coded rooms at the Museo HistĂłrico Municipal de Carcabuey are dedicated to different historical periods.

Traditions and Regional Specialities

The Toro de Cuerda is a tradition that has been practised since time immemorial: runners race through the streets ahead of a bull whose horns are tied with a rope. The festival draws thousands of people from across the region and from other provinces. The Ruta TurĂstica del Toro de Cuerda is a walking route along the course followed by the runners when the bull is released. Signs with QR codes link to videos of the different sections of the route.

On Easter Sunday, the Pascua de los Moraos takes place—a carnival-like festival that celebrates grotesque and absurd forms of expression. The Matanza Tradicional has a different focus: it is usually held in Carcabuey during the Constitution Bridge holiday around 8 December. The programme includes demonstrations of traditional production methods and tastings of cured meats, as well as samples of typical sweets, quince products, oils and cheese. Check the specific event dates and programme before travelling.

You can also discover olive oil and quince products at the Almazara de la Subbetica. The mill offers oil tastings and guided tours, and sells olive oil, quinces and products made from them. If you are planning a tasting or tour, it is advisable to check the visiting and booking arrangements in advance.
