El Hoyo: Nature, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in El Hoyo
El Hoyo brings together several themes to consider when planning your trip: a route for walking or cycling, a landscape shaped by mountains and dehesas, and places with historical significance. Local festivals and traditional cuisine are also among its highlights. You can decide whether to focus your stay on outdoor activities, cultural heritage or a culinary event.
Trails and landscape around El Hoyo
El Hoyo is surrounded by mountains, dehesas and reservoirs. The Ruta El Hoyo starts in the hamlet of El Hoyo in Belmez, Córdoba, and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. It is 3.9 kilometres long. This gives you a specific route distance to use in your planning, as well as two ways to experience the trail. You can decide whether to walk or cycle according to your own travel plans.
The landscape around the hamlet includes holm oaks and streams. The Fuente de la Herrumbrosa, built in 1910, is located here. It was used for consumption and was also attributed with medicinal uses. Its iron-rich water also gave the spring its popular name, Fuente Agria. A shaded rest area is provided for people passing through the area. This makes the spring a distinct topic of landscape and history alongside the Ruta El Hoyo.
Another striking natural feature is the Eucalyptus de la Fuente Agria de El Hoyo. Its broad trunk base forms a platform with a circumference of almost 16 metres. The tree is a Eucalyptus camaldulensis and is listed in the Andalusian Inventory of Remarkable Trees and Woodlands. It is also one of two eucalyptus trees in the province of Córdoba catalogued as remarkable trees of this species. Its unusual trunk base and its listing in the inventory provide two different points of interest for anyone curious about the area's natural features.
Castillo de Viandar and local history
Castillo de Viandar forms part of the cultural heritage of the Alto Guadiato mining landscape. It lies about 500 metres north of El Hoyo, on the 774-metre-high Alto del Castillo del Hoyo. The castle was probably built during the Caliphate period to protect the approaches to Córdoba from the northwest. Its approximate distance, stated elevation and cautious historical attribution give you different points of reference: its location, its place within the cultural heritage and a possible former defensive function.
The themes of Castillo de Viandar and the Ruta El Hoyo are therefore distinct: the castle focuses on history and its relationship with the landscape, while the route is defined by its stated distance and the choice between walking and cycling. Together with the area's landscape features, these aspects can help you decide what to focus on during your stay, without implying a set itinerary for your trip.
Festivals and regional cuisine
Cultural events in El Hoyo include the Fiestas Mayores in honour of the Virgen de Los Reyes. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates in advance for your preferred period. The Feria Gastronómica de El Hoyo offers a different focus: a local report from 2023 describes it as an annual event showcasing local specialities and the town's traditional cuisine.
The 2025 edition featured tastings of typical tapas, traditional cured meats, Vino de Pitarra and homemade sweets. A tasting of migas at the Caseta Municipal was also part of the event. While the Fiestas Mayores are defined by their dedication to the Virgen de Los Reyes, the Feria focuses on gastronomy. This helps you distinguish between the two events by their respective focuses and plan accordingly.
