Those looking for a hotel in El Viso can coordinate their travel dates with the cultural and natural highlights of their trip. These include the Auto Sacramental de los Reyes Magos, the Fiestas de Santa Ana, historic architecture, crafts, environmental education and routes of varying lengths. The dates of the Fiestas de Santa Ana are a particularly useful reference point for planning; the history of the buildings and exhibition venues offer other points of interest.

Festivals and shared cultural heritage

The Auto Sacramental de los Reyes Magos was declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía; the corresponding resolution by the Junta de Andalucía is dated 16 August 1999. According to older residents, the celebration dates back to 1835 or even earlier. The cast usually includes more than 100 residents of El Viso, including a choir and a dance group. The number of participants and the different groups give the performance a distinctly communal dimension.

The Fiestas de Santa Ana take place every year from 24 to 29 July. Traditionally, the encierros with young bulls are the main event; the exact programme may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around specific festival days, check the programme dates in advance.

Church, art and crafts

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación dates from the late 15th century and is classified among the so-called churches of the Mesta. The structure of its tower is also a distinctive feature: it consists of four sections, with the belfry in the second and the bell in the fourth. You can therefore appreciate the church both for its historical classification and its specific architectural features.

On Avenida Parque, above the Bar del Parque, there is a permanent exhibition centre for works by Aurelio Teno. The Centro de Artesanía de Los Pedroches is currently the headquarters of Ofiarpe, the Asociación de Artesanos de Los Pedroches; works by artisans from the comarca are displayed on the ground floor. The two venues offer different cultural perspectives: the work of an individual artist and crafts from the region.

The air-raid shelter beneath the square

The main air-raid shelter from the Spanish Civil War was dug largely by local residents beneath what is now Plaza de la Constitución. Its walk-through gallery is 78.5 metres long and runs in a zigzag beneath the square. The length of the gallery and its location beneath the plaza give the site a distinctive historical dimension. Access arrangements may change, so check them before planning a visit.

Environmental education and routes

The Aula de la Naturaleza «El Pocito» provides an overview of the natural environment of the Los Pedroches comarca. The centre is intended mainly for school visits; visitors can learn about the comarca’s most common fauna and flora there. Its facilities include exhibition areas, a conference room, an agricultural-themed area, and spaces for rest and recreation. Its focus is therefore on the natural environment of the comarca as a whole.

The routes also vary in length and how they can be travelled. One route, about 11 kilometres long, starts at the Ermita de Santa Rosalía and ends at the La Colada recreational area; it can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Another route is about 2 kilometres long, can be completed on foot or by bicycle, and allows visitors to see the municipality’s individual hermitages. Both routes can be walked; the longer route also mentions mountain bikes and horses, while the shorter one mentions bicycles.

Getting there and planning your visit

The main road access to El Viso is via the N-502, which directly connects several nearby places in the comarca. Check road conditions before setting out. Some of the municipality’s tourist attractions have visiting hours, while others require an appointment in advance. If you are planning a visit, ask the municipality about the specific arrangements.
