In the Valle del Guadiato, Espiel brings together rocky terrain, Mediterranean woodland, reservoirs, and open landscapes. This offers several ways to plan your trip: architecture and local history, the romería, trails through the countryside, and nature and stargazing. The places and themes below give you specific ideas for tailoring your stay to your interests.

Cultural Heritage and Architectural History

The Ruinas visigodas del Cerro del Germo, also known as Cerro del Germo or El Germo, are a listed monument (B.I.C.) in the municipality of Espiel. The listing dates from 3 June 1931.

Castillo de El Vacar, in El Vacar (Espiel), is classified as military heritage. What remains is an approximately quadrilateral defensive area surrounded by thick walls. Its sides measure 65, 59.5, 50.1, and 49.5 metres. There are four towers at the corners, plus four more along each side. The measurements and the described arrangement of the towers give a concrete impression of the form of the surviving structure.

The Puente Romano de Espiel also offers a glimpse of different historical periods. Existing documentation dates the bridge visible today to 1731. An older bridge may previously have stood here, but could have been destroyed or severely damaged by flooding of the Guadiato River. The existence of this earlier bridge remains a possibility; the date of 1731 refers to the structure visible today.

Romería and the Memory of Mining

The Romería de la Virgen de la Estrella takes place every year on the night of the last Sunday in April. If you would like to plan your visit around this festival, check the event date before travelling. A procession of floats and riders travels from the Paseo in Espiel to the Ermita, three kilometres away. After the offering and Mass, hornazo, a typical dish from Espiel, is served there. The celebration thus combines a procession and religious ceremony with local food culture.

A description from 2023 mentions a visitor route featuring five scenes. The scenes refer to coal mining, Espiel’s past as a mining district, and the recovery of a collective memory. This theme adds another perspective on local history alongside the architecture: the focus is not only on surviving walls and bridges, but also on the memory of mining.

Landscape, Trails, and Things to See

The Sendero del Calatraveño passes through Mediterranean woodland typical of the Sierra Morena, with rockroses, cork oaks, and planted pine trees. From the Antenas del Calatraveño, you can enjoy far-reaching views across the Valle de los Pedroches and the Sierra Morena. The trail thus combines a specific description of the plant life with named landscapes that can be seen from the viewpoint.

The trail also leads into the area around the Molino de Los Pilones, where amphibians and nesting waterbirds can be observed. One route in Espiel leads to the Mirador de los Pinos. These places offer different experiences: the focus here is on wildlife observation and views, while other attractions centre on cultural heritage or mining.

The night sky is another possible focus for observation: Espiel’s night skies are designated as a Starlight Reserve and are suitable for stargazing. For climbers, the La V climbing sector in Espiel has routes up to 140 metres long; the area is a limestone crag. These details describe a distinct focus alongside the landscape trails. Together, they help you explore Espiel according to specific interests, without conflating its different places and activities.
