Los Morenos – Hiking, Landscape and Santa Elena
Accommodation in Los Morenos
Los Morenos combines hiking with rural landscapes and local cultural attractions. The Camino de la Encomienda Mellariense, the dehesa and the tradition surrounding Santa Elena offer visitors concrete points of interest. When planning a stay, you can decide whether to focus on the trails, the landscape or the village’s history.
Hiking and Route Planning
The Camino de la Encomienda Mellariense ecocultural hiking project was launched at the initiative of the Fuente Obejuna municipal tourism office to restore old routes that connected the hamlets of Fuente Obejuna. The trail follows public paths and connects the 14 hamlets of Fuente Obejuna. The fourth stage starts in Los Morenos, is divided into four sections and is 19.6 kilometres long in total. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
A route of about 21 kilometres is classified as moderately difficult. After the Cortijo de Los Rubios, the route follows a wide track to the settlement of Los Morenos. Rest and supply points include Arroyo Ballesteros, Cortijo de Los Rubios, Puerto del Anillo, Molino del Conventillo, and the hamlets of Los Morenos and La Cardenchosa. Check in advance which of these points are currently available and enquire about the route’s condition.
The information provides different points of reference for choosing a route: for the Camino, the starting point, section breakdown and total distance are specified; for the approximately 21-kilometre route, a moderate difficulty rating is also provided. This lets you factor distance, route layout and difficulty into your plans.
Landscape and Village History
Los Morenos is closely connected with the dehesa landscape and rural life of Fuente Obejuna. The surrounding area includes olive groves and nearby orchards. Routes through the rural hamlets of Fuente Obejuna also let you experience simple vernacular architecture and mountain landscapes. Los Morenos’s landscape features can therefore be appreciated alongside a broader regional perspective on architecture and mountain scenery.
Santa Elena is the patron saint shared by Los Morenos and La Cardenchosa; both villages use the same image. A report from 2024 describes a Eucharistic celebration in Los Morenos park on 14 August, followed by a procession carrying the banner of Santa Elena through the village streets. If you would like to plan your visit around a festival, check the current programme in advance.
The Centro de Salud (Los Morenos) was created from former micro-schools, which were converted into a health and community centre. The building is classified as being of architectural interest, Grade II. Los Morenos also has a medical outpost of the Servicio Andaluz de Salud.
