Discover Priego de Córdoba
Accommodation in Priego de Córdoba
Priego de Córdoba combines a historic townscape with museums, traditions and opportunities for hiking. The Barrio de la Villa y Balcón del Adarve was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1972. Its winding, white, narrow streets reflect its medieval Muslim heritage. There are also different options for planning your trip, from local history and architecture to hiking and olive oil.
Old Town, Fortress and Fuente del Rey
A recommended walk through the Barrio de la Villa leads from Plaza de Santa Ana via Calle Real, Placita de San Antonio and Calle Jazmines to the Adarve. This gives you a specific sequence of streets to follow as you discover the character of the historic quarter.
El Castillo is an Arab fortress that was remodelled in the 13th and 14th centuries and originally served primarily military purposes. On the Vial del Castillo pedestrian path, you walk between the fortress walls and those of the medieval town, where you can spot medieval building techniques along the way. Fuente del Rey is considered Priego’s most monumental fountain and is described as having more than a hundred spouts.
Two Museums, Different Perspectives
The Museo Histórico Municipal was founded in 1983. Its visitor area comprises four rooms and a colonnaded courtyard; the chronological exhibition spans the period from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. Exhibits include prehistoric metal tools dating from the 3rd to 2nd millennium BC, including bronze arrowheads and knives, as well as a silver pendant. There is also a model of the Lastra dolmen. The dolmen is considered the only known megalithic remnant in the south of Córdoba province.
The Casa Museo D. Niceto Alcalá-Zamora y Torres is located in the birthplace of the president of the Second Spanish Republic, a stately 19th-century house. Visitors can see the house’s original layout, garden and furnishings, as well as original objects, photographs, drawings and information panels. The visit thus connects the person’s history with the rooms and furnishings of the house.
Traditions with Historical Connections
The Hermanos de la Aurora, a group of bell singers, make their way through the streets of Priego every Saturday at midnight. They sing locally written coplas and call people to pray the Rosary. If you are planning your stay specifically around this custom, check the arrangements locally.
The Domingos de Mayo date back to a tradition more than three and a half centuries old. Their essential structure, with solemn church services, a sermon, music and a procession on Sunday afternoon, has been preserved. Dates vary each year, so check the dates for your travel year. A historical point of reference is the oldest surviving record book of the Hermanos de la Aurora, which begins on 1 January 1696.
Hiking and Scenery
Priego de Córdoba lies at the foot of the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park. Pico Tiñosa is the highest point in Córdoba province. For a circular hike, San Miguel del Castellar offers specific route details: the route is 17.6 kilometres long, takes about four and a half hours to walk, is of medium-to-high difficulty, and reaches a maximum elevation of 872 metres. Check the route specifications before setting out.
The Sendero Cruz de los Panaderos passes through the Sierra de Albayate and combines natural, archaeological and ethnographic interest with Mediterranean forest flora and fauna. The two hiking descriptions have different focuses: San Miguel del Castellar is presented in terms of distance, walking time, difficulty and elevation, while Cruz de los Panaderos is characterised by its nature, archaeology and ethnography.
Cultural Routes and Olive Oil
Priego de Córdoba is a stop on the Ruta del Califato, a European Cultural Route that passes through Andalusian areas from Córdoba to Granada. Another regional connection is the Ruta Turismo y Aceite, which links Almedinilla, Fuente Tójar and Priego de Córdoba under the DOP Priego de Córdoba protected designation of origin.
A visit to an olive oil mill is also possible as part of the Ruta Turismo y Aceite, offering an opportunity to learn about the olive oil production process. Arrange such a visit with the mill in question. This lets you plan a stay around historic sites, hiking and olive oil without all your interests having to share the same focus.
