Zuheros brings together a protected historic centre, prehistoric cave paintings, museums and experiences centred on olive oil and cheese. If you are looking for a hotel in Zuheros, you can plan your stay around these varied interests: the town’s history, the Cueva de los Murciélagos and local craft traditions each offer their own points of interest.

Local history and museums

Zuheros’s defined historic centre is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. The origins of the Castillo-Palacio de Zuheros are associated with a settlement of the Muslim Banu Himsi in the 9th century, in the area around the villa. This historical account therefore points to settlement near the villa.

The Museo de Costumbres y Artes Populares «Juan Fernández Cruz» focuses on the economic and social way of life in Zuheros and its region; the period covered runs from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. Its 28 museum areas and collection of more than 3,000 objects explore this subject from different angles: alongside ways of life and work, they also consider customs and traditions.

The Museo Arqueológico Municipal displays archaeological remains from the 1991 and 1992 excavations of the Cueva de los Murciélagos, as well as other finds from sites in the municipality of Zuheros. The Ecomuseum recreates the inside of the cave, with its cavities and galleries, in several rooms. This allows visitors to explore archaeological finds, ethnographic collections and representations of the cave’s interior as distinct museum themes.

Cueva de los Murciélagos

The Cueva de los Murciélagos is located in the municipality of Zuheros and within the Sierras Subbéticas Geopark. It preserves prehistoric paintings from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The cave’s archaeological significance and its limestone formations are both highlights.

The tourist route runs for 415 metres, descends 700 steps and reaches a depth of 65 metres. Its formations include «El Espárrago», a four-metre-high stalagmite formation. The cave can be visited as part of a guided tour; access is limited, so advance booking is required. If the cave is a key reason for your trip, arrange your booking before visiting.

Another experience combines the cave with a regional speciality: OleotourZuheros offers a private guided AOVE tasting in the Cueva de los Murciélagos, followed by a private visit to the cave. AOVE stands for extra virgin olive oil. The experience thus combines a tasting and cave visit in a private format.

Landscape, trails and traditions

The Sendero del río Bailón runs along the Bailón River through the Poljé de La Nava. During the rainy season, the trail reaches the Las Chorreras waterfalls. The route and its seasonal waterfalls make this trail distinct from the cave tour: here, the river, karst landscape and rainy season shape the experience.

Cheese is another regional speciality. Since 1995, Quesería Los Balanchares has been making artisan cheeses using traditional recipes and offering various tastings, which must be booked in advance. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider a cheese tasting and the private AOVE experience as two distinct options.

Melenchón is a traditional carnival game played in a circle in the street. Older residents sing satirical and romantic verses. The game and its verses offer a different way to experience local traditions from the museum collections: the focus is on playing together and singing.

Zuheros is also home to a workshop for sculptural works that uses local olive, walnut and almond wood, among other materials. Along with the museums, cave, trails and culinary experiences, Zuheros offers a range of interests to guide your hotel search and help you plan your stay.
