Alhama de Granada: Nature, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Alhama De Granada
Alhama de Granada offers a range of options to help you plan your trip: protected landscapes, routes, historic buildings and recurring festivals. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose one based on the focus of your stay—such as nature trails, local history or a particular festival date.
Landscape and thermal pools
The Tajos de Alhama Natural Monument is a protected landscape featuring sandstone gorges and crevices formed by the Alhama River. The Tajos are also classified as an outstanding landscape in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage. Visits to the natural monument are possible via signposted paths or marked routes; check the current regulations on site.
The natural thermal pools are also among the area's natural attractions. The water is said to be around 47°C all year round. If you are planning a public visit, check the access conditions on site.
Routes by length and focus
The 6 km Camino Medieval de los Ángeles / Humedal de la Pantaneta route links historic viewpoints and the riverside surroundings with sections of the GR7-E4. It also leads to a wetland where waterbirds can be observed. The route therefore brings together several different landscape and nature themes.
The 13.5 km Los Crestones del Cañón de los Tajos route runs along the eastern and western slopes of the canyon and includes sections of the GR-7. A longer option is the 17 km route to the Quejigo de Júrtiga: it passes through Mediterranean woodland to the old, especially large Quejigo de Júrtiga oak. The Alhama de Granada–Los Llanos–Los Morales route is 17.6 km long and links historic heritage, traditional paths and natural landscapes.
The routes range from 6 to 17.6 km in length, and their described focuses also differ—from the wetland to the canyon slopes and woodland, as well as the combination of heritage and landscape. When planning your walks, check current trail conditions and the safety requirements in force on site.
History and culture
The Iglesia Mayor de Santa María de la Encarnación dates from the 16th century. It was built at the behest of the Catholic Monarchs on the site of the former main mosque. The church houses an ecclesiastical museum with liturgical vestments and sacred objects from the 15th and 16th centuries. The collection on display may vary.
The former prison complex of Alhama de Granada was built in 1674. The Centro de Interpretación Alhama de Granada (CIAG) presents local history and culture in six themed rooms featuring multimedia and 3D.
Festivals throughout the year
La Candelaria is celebrated on 2 February with bonfires, traditional Meceores, traditional verses, and local food and wine. The specific programme may vary from year to year. The Fiesta del Vino is also held every year in February: it includes a tasting of locally produced wine and traditional dishes such as olla jameña, choto, migas, cheese and cured meats. Dates and programme details may change.
The Alhama Carnival and Domingo de Piñata are also part of the festival calendar. They are considered an event of Andalusian Tourist Interest; festivities include Murgas, Comparsas and popular verses. The programme may change from year to year. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates and programme in advance.
