Alhendín offers opportunities for a stay combining cultural history, local traditions and time outdoors.

Church architecture and religious art

The Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción was built over a mosque and features Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Its nave has a single aisle; the side chapels are connected by round arches. The main altar niche contains a depiction of the Immaculate Conception by Pedro de Mena. The church therefore combines a layered architectural history with readily describable features of its interior.

The Ermita de la Virgen de la Aurora offers a different point of interest. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century and is home to the venerated image of the Virgen de la Aurora. At the Iglesia, the focus is on the floor plan, chapels and architectural styles; at the Ermita, it is on the construction period and veneration of the image. This distinction helps visitors appreciate the two sites as distinct themes in Alhendín’s religious history.

Circular route and landscape

The “De la Vega al Secano” tourist route is a 10.5-kilometre circular trail that starts at Parque Ferial. The route is estimated to take four to five hours and is described as easy. This allows you to set aside a longer block of time when planning your day. Check current trail conditions locally before setting out.

The eastern and southern slopes of Montevive also shape the landscape: they are characterised by biodiversity and a local ecosystem, and offer views of the Sierra Nevada and El Temple. Casa Colorá, a cortijo dating from 1800, is also located on the “De la Vega al Secano” route. The landscape and rural architectural heritage stand out here as distinct aspects of the surroundings.

Historical traces and rural engineering

The remains of Alhendín’s former fortress were an important site in the suppression of the first Morisco uprising in 1500. The Aljibe del Cortijo de Miñarro offers a different historical perspective: this Arab hydraulic structure naturally collects rainwater to irrigate the land. Together, these sites represent different functions of historic buildings—defence and water management.

Traditions and their dates

San Marcos is a local tradition held on 25 April. Families and friends go out into the countryside to practise “cascar el huevo”; the bread associated with the custom is known in Alhendín as “el macarrón”. The Reverencias are a tradition that has been observed for more than a hundred years on Easter Sunday: the Resurrection is depicted in front of the Ermita de la Virgen de la Aurora.

If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the arrangements for the relevant year. San Marcos falls on 25 April, while the Reverencias take place on Easter Sunday. The dates and specific programme should therefore be taken into account when planning your trip.
