If you are considering Baúl as a destination for a hotel stay, you can plan your trip around several themes: a former railway line with a railway bridge, gorge and river landscapes, and archaeological and local cultural heritage. The Vía Verde Sierra de Baza offers a different focus from the patron saint festivals and historic sites in the area around the village.

Greenway and Railway Heritage

The Vía Verde Sierra de Baza follows the former route of the Guadix–Baza railway line. Train service there ended on 31 December 1984; the former railway line forms the corridor of the greenway. The Puente de El Baúl is one of the route’s main attractions. This complex wrought-iron structure was designed in the workshops of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel and assembled in 1907. Along the paths of the former railway line, visitors can take in the landscape of northeastern Granada and preserved elements of railway industrial heritage.

The Vía Verde is primarily recommended as a cycling route, but it can also be explored on foot, including in sections. It is considered a moderately difficult route, with a positive elevation gain of 316 metres. Seasonal conditions can affect the practical difficulty, so take them into account when planning your route. The Puente del Baúl is currently accessible to visitors; check access again before your trip.

Gorge and Geomorphology

The Cañones imposibles route offers a different perspective on the landscape. It includes the Baúl stream gorge in the settlement of Baúl and follows the stream through a deeply incised gorge, a natural narrow passage shaped by intense erosion, with a spectacular metal bridge. The route illustrates geomorphology and fluvio-karst incision. It draws attention not only to the shape of the gorge but also to how it was formed geomorphologically. If you are planning this activity, check its availability before booking.

Castle Ruins and Megalithic Heritage

The Castillo de Baúl is a medieval military castle on Cerro Testigo, located in the municipality of Baza, southeast of the settlement. The remains include sections of wall and a rectangular tower. At the same time, the site is in a state of ongoing deterioration and retains important elements. As its condition may change, it is advisable to check it again before visiting.

The megalithic necropolis, designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) and located near the village centre, comprises six megalithic tombs. It offers a different perspective on cultural heritage from the medieval military castle: here, the focus is on tombs; there, on a fortification. Another area designated as a BIC lies between the Baúl and Valdiquín gorges, beside the railway bridge and the centre of Baúl.

Patron Saint Festivals in Baúl

Traditional patron saint festivals are celebrated in Baúl in honour of San Isidro Labrador and the Virgen de Fátima. For 2026, the municipal programme lists regional dances, ribbon races, music, sports and traditional games; activities may vary from one edition to another. If attending a festival is important to your trip, check the dates and the specific programme for the edition in question. This lets you plan around the festivities without assuming that the programme for one edition will apply to another.
