Discover Chauchina through a landmark building, religious traditions and a route through the Vega Baja. The Torre de Roma, the Ermita de la Virgen del Espino and the Iglesia de Nuestro Señor de la Humildad each offer a different perspective. There is also a longstanding music event and a mountain biking event whose route is described for the 2026 edition. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Chauchina, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Torre de Roma: Construction History and Historic Line of Sight

The Torre de Roma is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural and was built in the 13th or 14th century. The Nasrid tower is approximately 14 metres high. Its architecture includes three levels with barrel vaults, a terrace and a cistern. The vaulted ceilings and other architectural features mentioned offer different points of reference when exploring the tower’s design.

The Torre’s classification is also shaped by a historical connection: according to historical interpretation, it had a line of sight to the Alhambra and Castillo de Moclín. This line of sight should be understood as an interpretation relating to the past. The Torre thus combines specific architectural features with a historical interpretation of its relationship to two other buildings.

Religious Traditions and Buildings

The Ermita de la Virgen del Espino is also known as the Virgen del Pincho. According to local tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to a local woman at the site of the Ermita in 1906. The first chapel was inaugurated in 1918. The image of the Virgen del Espino is kept at the Ermita by Capuchin Poor Clares; the people of Chauchina have venerated the Ermita for a century.

The present-day Iglesia de Nuestro Señor de la Humildad dates from 1982 and is dedicated to the Santo Cristo de la Humildad. Its central nave is flanked by two side aisles, connected to it by round arches. Another element of the cultural heritage is La Peana, a remnant of one of the columns of the Palacio de Carlos V. Together, these places reveal different facets of Chauchina’s religious and architectural heritage, without conflating their individual histories.

A Route Through the Vega Baja

The Ruta de la Vega a la Torre de Roma starts beside the Ermita de la Virgen del Espino, also known as the Virgen del Pincho, and continues from there to the Iglesia de Nuestro Señor de la Humildad. The route passes through the Vega Baja, among cultivated fields and irrigation channels, and runs parallel to the Río Genil. The natural surroundings of Chauchina are also characterised by poplar groves along the Río Genil. The route description therefore covers both the connection between two religious buildings and the agricultural landscape.

Music and Mountain Biking Event

The Certamen de Bandas de MĂşsica de AndalucĂa began in 1989 and has been held ever since without interruption, under the direction and guidance of the Ayuntamiento de Chauchina. It promotes the dissemination and appreciation of Andalusian music and its composers. If the Certamen is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Saucina Bike Race is a non-competitive mountain biking event. The route for the 2026 edition passes through the municipal areas of Chauchina, Fuente Vaqueros, Láchar, Chimeneas and Santa Fe. The route may vary from one edition to another. If you are planning a trip around this event, check the details for the relevant edition rather than assuming the route remains unchanged.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

By car, Chauchina is accessible via the A-92, exit 227 towards Chauchina and Fuente Vaqueros. Check road conditions separately for your travel date.
