Discover Dílar
Accommodation in Dílar
If you would like to include nature, trails and local culture in your travel plans, you will find a range of options in Dílar. These include the wooded landscape of the Alayos, excursions around the Río Dílar, religious buildings and recurring festivals. When choosing a hotel in Dílar, you can consider whether your stay will be shaped mainly by hiking, cultural sites or a particular date in the annual calendar.
Landscape and trails around Dílar
Ermita Vieja lies in a wooded valley surrounded by the high peaks of the Alayos. The complex includes, among other things, a classroom with laboratory equipment and a separate astronomy room. Excursions from Ermita Vieja give visitors the opportunity to learn about the ecosystem of the Río Dílar.
The Sulayr Trail passes through the municipality of Dílar on the Cortijuela–Rinconada de Nigüelas section. Along this section, it crosses Collado Chaquetas, passes through the Río Dílar and continues uphill via Umbría de la Dehesa. The route is of particular interest for its scenery and botany, and is home to valuable wildlife. Ibex are often spotted on the Integral y Faldeo de los Alayos de Dílar circular route, though sightings cannot be guaranteed. The circular route is 19.90 kilometres long. Trail conditions and signage may change seasonally, so you should take this into account when planning.
Sendero 15 begins about 300 metres beyond the Ermita de la Virgen de las Nieves de Dílar. A turn-off leads in just a few minutes to Piedra Ventana, a large perforated rock above the Padul fault. From there, the trail offers views of peaks including Pico del Caballo. These details provide different points of reference for excursions: a specific route length for the circular route, and a starting point and turn-off to a distinctive rock for Sendero 15.
Religious heritage and local crafts
The Ermita de la Virgen de las Nieves de Dílar is located at the upper edge of the town and overlooks the Vega de Granada and the Sierra. It is the municipality’s most important religious building. The present-day Santuario de la Virgen de las Nieves was built on the outskirts of the town in 1796 and is the only chapel where the image of the Virgin and the associated religious devotion have been preserved.
Another local landmark is the Casa de las Piedras on the Camino de la Ermita. The building is made of pebbles and stones from the beach. Esparto is also part of the local craft tradition: the material is used to make, among other things, baskets, zurrones, fans, mats, ropes and traditional farming tools; the specific products may vary.
Festivals and dates throughout the year
The patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de las Nieves, patron saint of Dílar and the Sierra Nevada, take place around 15 August. The programme includes, among other things, dances, processions, fireworks and a pilgrimage; details may vary from year to year. Another occasion is Christmas Eve: after Midnight Mass, La Pastorada is performed, a sung live representation of the birth of Jesus and the adoration of the shepherds.
The Fiesta de las Castañas takes place on 31 October. Chestnuts are roasted, anise is drunk and costumes are worn. If a festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates and programme in advance.
Olive oil experience and practical planning
Quaryat Dillar offers tours at a family-run olive oil mill in Dílar. You will learn about the traditional production of extra virgin olive oil; advance booking is required for the tour. The experience also includes walks through centuries-old olive groves in and around Dílar, as well as tasting menus paired with its own extra virgin olive oil. Centro Ecuestre Los Alayos offers horseback rides, riding routes and excursions through Sierra Nevada Natural Park. Check availability before your trip.
Dílar is accessible via the A-44: take the Otura exit, then follow the NO-5 towards Dílar. As road conditions and signage may change, it is a good idea to check the current route before setting off. This allows you to take your journey, seasonal trail conditions and any experiences requiring advance booking into account together when planning.
