Discover Escúzar: History and Panoramas
Accommodation in Escúzar
Escúzar combines historic buildings with a viewpoint and a distinctive landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Escúzar, these highlights may help you choose your destination: the Torre de Escúzar and Ermita del Cristo del Rescate reflect different historical connections, while the Mirador de la Cruz Mocha draws your attention to the landscape. Cuevas del Agua adds another distinctive feature with its green meadows, holm oaks and wild-growing flora. Depending on whether architecture, panoramas or nature matters most to your travel plans, you may find different reasons to consider the area more closely.
Views and a circular trail at the Mirador de la Cruz Mocha
The Mirador de la Cruz Mocha is located above Escúzar and offers 360-degree panoramic views, including views of the Sierra Nevada. Its sweeping vistas make the viewpoint a distinctive highlight alongside the historic buildings. In 2021, an institutional post described a newly created, marked circular trail in the viewpoint area, with benches and a few picnic tables. If you plan to include the trail in your itinerary, check locally on its current upkeep.
Tower, church and historical connections
The Torre de Escúzar is attached to the south wall of the local church. It was the starting point for a historic complex that today consists of the so-called Casa Grande, the parish church and the current town hall. This connection places the tower within the area’s architectural history. The Torre is a rectangular alquería tower with a base measuring 8.05 × 4.90 metres. Its lower level corresponds to an old circular cistern with a diameter of 3.10 metres; it is considered the only one of its kind in the entire province. The contrast between the tower’s rectangular footprint and the circular cistern brings two different architectural forms together in a single structure.
The Ermita del Cristo del Rescate was built in the 19th century. Its small interior has a Latin cross-shaped floor plan and houses an image of the Cristo del Rescate. Its cross-shaped layout contrasts with the tower’s rectangular form and the circular cistern. The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Rosario also provides a historical point of reference: its first recorded mention dates to 1563. This date marks the first recorded mention, not the year it was built. While the date places the church’s history in time, the floor plans and measurements reveal other, architectural aspects of Escúzar.
Cuevas del Agua and the landscape
The area known as Cuevas del Agua consists of striking green meadows surrounded by holm oaks and wild-growing flora. The meadows and vegetation create a different impression from the Torre’s measurements or the parish church’s historical date: here the landscape takes centre stage, while there the focus is on architecture and historical records.
