Fonelas – Geopark, Fossils and Dolmens
Accommodation in Fonelas
Fonelas brings together a remarkable geological and archaeological history with a landscape shaped by the RĂo Fardes. The entire municipality lies within the Granada Geopark, which is part of UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network. The RĂo Fardes flows through the municipality. Fonelas lies along the north–south axis of the river’s Vega, which is surrounded by ravines. These natural and historical themes offer several starting points for planning your trip—from visiting a palaeontological facility to exploring the area’s long history of settlement.
Palaeontology and geological educational trail
The Fonelas P-1 site is about 2.0 million years old. It contains an exceptionally well-preserved fossil record with great biodiversity, making it a special point of reference for the area’s palaeontological history. The Centro paleontolĂłgico Fonelas P-1 is a separate entity: it is a scientific and technical facility of the IGME’s Valle del RĂo Fardes Palaeontological Station and is open to visitors. The station can be reached from Fonelas on foot or by bicycle; the IGME recommends walking. Check the visitor regulations and route conditions before setting out.
A 1 km geological educational trail is located on the grounds of the IGME’s Valle del RĂo Fardes Palaeontological Station (EPVRF) in Fonelas. Information panels and information totems related to magnetostratigraphy explain the RĂo Fardes valley, landscape units, present-day flora and fauna, and human settlement and use of the area. Geological topics are thus presented alongside ecological and cultural-historical questions. The stated length helps you treat this trail as a separate activity; by itself, it does not indicate how long the walk will take.
Dolmens and early settlement history
Prehistoric history is also an important part of Fonelas. During the Copper Age, or Chalcolithic period, from around 2600 to 2200 BC, an important megalithic settlement centre with more than 70 dolmens stood here. The dolmens and palaeontological topics relate to different periods: the educational trail explores geological and landscape connections, while the dolmens tell the story of prehistoric settlement. Both can help you tailor your stay to your interests, without limiting your plans to a single theme.
Festivals throughout the year
If you are interested in local traditions, you can plan your trip around several festival dates. Every year on 15 May or the nearest weekend, a pilgrimage takes place from Fonelas to the Ermita de San Torcuato. The celebrations for Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Fátima take place on the weekend closest to 15 August and include a RomerĂa, a Mass and a solemn procession. The celebration in honour of Nuestra Señora la Virgen de los Dolores includes a festive address on Palm Sunday, a procession through the streets of Fonelas and a solemn Eucharistic celebration. Check the dates for the relevant year if you plan to visit for one of these events.
Peaches and local cuisine
Peaches are among Fonelas’s best-known local products. They are grown in the area and used in numerous recipes. Melocotones al vino is considered a typical Fonelas recipe. This offers a culinary connection to the area to include in your travel plans, alongside its geological, palaeontological and historical themes.
If you are looking for a hotel in Fonelas, you can choose your travel dates based on whether you want to focus mainly on the Palaeontological Station, the educational trail, the dolmens or one of the local celebrations. If you visit the station, be sure to follow the visitor regulations; if you are travelling for a festival, it is a good idea to check its date for the relevant year.
