Fuente Vaqueros: Lorca, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Fuente Vaqueros
Fuente Vaqueros brings together the life story of Federico García Lorca, cultural sites and trails along rivers and through cultivated land. This offers different ways to plan your trip: you can explore Lorca’s early biography and the town’s cultural life, or set aside time for the described routes through the landscape.
Lorca at the birthplace museum, church and archive
The Museo Casa Natal Federico García Lorca is housed in a typical farmhouse in the Vega, built in 1880. Federico García Lorca was born here on 5 June 1898 and spent his early childhood here. A visit brings together two specific aspects: the history of a typical farmhouse and the poet’s early biography.
Visits to the birthplace museum are guided and begin on the hour; groups should arrange access in advance by telephone or email. Reservations are available for the RUTA URBANA, as well as for a theatrical visit to the Museo Casa Natal. Check current visiting and reservation options before your arrival, as schedules and arrangements may change.
The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación also connects architectural history with Lorca’s biography. The present-day church preserves the tower of its predecessor, which was completed in 1870. The rest of the building was demolished and rebuilt in 1954. The church contains the baptismal font where García Lorca was baptised; his baptismal certificate is held in the church archive.
The Centro de Estudios Lorquiano preserves documentary and bibliographic heritage and makes it available to researchers. Its work with documents and literature thus complements the biographical sites and records in the town.
Cultural programme and art in public spaces
In addition to theatre performances, the Teatro Federico García Lorca hosts flamenco shows, film screenings, congresses, conferences, music concerts and exhibitions. The events taking place during your stay may change. If you are interested in a particular type of event, check the latest dates before your trip.
The Museo al aire libre is a project in development that brings motifs from the Lorquian imagination to the streets of Fuente Vaqueros. El Niño de las Pinturas, Carlos Jerez and Badi Coloreando are involved. The project adds an artistic dimension in public spaces to the town’s connection with Lorca.
Trails along the Genil and Cubillas
The SL-A 202 Ruta Lorquiana del Agua was officially approved in 2016 and is 8.3 kilometres long. It passes through cultivated land and poplar groves, by irrigation channels and towards the Río Cubillas. The trail follows the river corridor to the area of the Cortijo del Martinete. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The Ruta a orillas del Genil is a circular route along both banks of the Río Genil. Water emerging from underground there contributes to a diverse range of animal and plant life. The Puente de los Suspiros is 35 metres long and forms part of the Ruta del Agua de Fuente Vaqueros.
Fuente Vaqueros has hiking and cycling routes. The town council provides visitors with free bicycles at the Teatro García Lorca. Check before your trip whether bicycles will be available during your visit.
This gives you two distinct focuses to choose from when planning: the biographical and cultural sites associated with Lorca, and the trails along the Genil and Cubillas and their surrounding landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel in Fuente Vaqueros, consider which of these focuses you would like to shape your stay. It is best to check event, reservation and trail details for your travel dates.
