The municipality of Gor is located in Sierra de Baza Natural Park. Hiking and cycling routes, recurring festivals, and archaeological and historical sites offer specific points of interest for a stay. The options vary by route, date and historical context: alongside a short hiking trail, there is a 55.9-kilometre cycling route. If you choose Gor as your destination, you can plan your trip around the festival dates or focus on the routes and local history.

Hiking and Cycling in Gor

The linear Minas de la Cruz hiking trail is 1,261 metres long; walking time is about 20 minutes, and the difficulty level is low. This makes it a short, clearly defined hiking option. It ends at the old Minas de la Cruz mines and at a reconstruction of the mining headframe that once stood there. The endpoint connects the trail with a specific testament to the area’s former mining industry. The combination of a short route and a named mining destination makes the hike easy to plan using two specific criteria: the time required and the destination at the end of the trail. The section along the forest track is partly accessible by bicycle.

A 55.9 km cycling route connects the city of Baza with the town of Gor and runs through the western part of the nature park. It ends in the town centre of Gor at the Fuente de los Siete Caños, next to the washhouse. This means that the route has a clearly named arrival point in Gor as well as linking Baza and Gor. Compared with the 1,261-metre Minas de la Cruz hiking trail, it is a considerably longer route and a different kind of activity.

Festivals and Cultural Traditions

Two festivals have specific dates to take into account when planning your trip. The patron saint festivities in honour of San Cayetano in Gor are celebrated from 6 to 10 August inclusive. The traditional San Blas festival takes place on 3 February. San Blas includes an all-night vigil for the saint on the eve of the festival, a procession to the Triana neighbourhood and a Holy Mass. The two occasions therefore differ not only in the month: specific parts of the San Blas celebrations are also named. If you plan your trip around a festival, check the relevant dates before booking.

The municipality describes the Encierros de Gor as one of the oldest bull runs in Spain and traces them back to 1622.

Archaeology and the Castle

Las Angosturas is a major archaeological site in the municipality of Gor. It contains Iberian, Byzantine and Arab remains. There is also a burial site at Las Angosturas dating to around 2300 BC, with a rich and extensive assemblage of grave goods. The site thus brings together evidence from several cultural periods, while the burial site points to a significantly earlier period.

Gor Castle also brings together specific architectural features and the history of the town. It has three towers and remains of its walls, and was the residence of the Duke of Gor, the lord of the town. The structural remains provide an insight into the castle’s form; its former function as a residence adds the historical role of the duke to this perspective.
