Huéscar offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: modernist architecture, insights into the town’s history, recurring festivals and outdoor activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Huéscar, these themes can help you match your travel dates to the kind of itinerary you have in mind.

Architecture and Town History

Casa de los Penalva, in Huéscar’s historic centre, is one of Andalusia’s most notable and distinctive modernist buildings. Its features include a monumental façade and grand interiors in the Art Nouveau style. It also combines elements of historicist eclecticism, a courtyard inspired by the Alhambra and a Neo-Gothic oratory. The Casa is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural, in the Monument category, in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage. It was listed on 5 November 2024.

The Museo Interactivo Ciudad de Huéscar is housed in the Convento de San Francisco. The museum tour takes visitors through five rooms, each devoted to a specific aspect of Huéscar’s history and culture. The Torre del Homenaje offers a different perspective on the town’s history: it is a restored medieval section of the former fortifications and serves as a viewpoint from which to understand the former defensive system.

The tower’s construction is also described in specific terms: the square defensive structure is made of rammed earth and formed part of Huéscar’s former Muslim fortress. Its shape, material and historical function can therefore be understood as interconnected aspects of the town’s former defences.

Another named site in the municipality of Huéscar (Granada) is Piedra del Letrero. It lies along the route to the sanctuary of the Santas Mártires.

Festivals and When to Visit

Semana Santa in Huéscar is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía. Another recurring event is the Feria de la Oveja Segureña, held in Huéscar every September. The programme includes livestock shows, tastings of Segureño lamb, various competitions and a flamenco programme. If you’d like to plan your trip around a festival, check the event dates for your travel period.

Parks, Activities and Routes

Parque Rodríguez Penalva covers about 10 hectares and is home to Mediterranean trees and a variety of bird species. Parque Manuel Rodríguez Penalva offers space to relax, stroll and read outdoors. The two parks therefore offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors: Parque Rodríguez Penalva is notable for its size, trees and bird species, while Parque Manuel Rodríguez Penalva is suited to quiet outdoor leisure.

At Manantial de Fuencaliente, visitors can swim, sunbathe in shaded areas, play tennis or basketball, and picnic. If you’re planning to do any of these activities, check the latest visitor information beforehand.

The routes are also described in terms of their distinct features. The route to Ermita de las Santas runs through the valley of the Río Bravatas and follows a paved road. Near Huéscar, there is also the circular Nacimiento del Río Guardal route, which is about 5.04 kilometres long. The first route is characterised by its valley setting and surface, while the Guardal route is defined by its circular layout and approximate length.

Huéscar offers opportunities for free flight by paraglider, hang glider and paramotor. Three free-flight launch sites are Sierra de la Encantada, with a southwest-facing launch, and Sierra de Marmolance and Sierra de Perico Ruíz, both with southeast-facing launches. Before making plans, check the current launch conditions, permit information and availability of these opportunities.
