Huétor Santillán brings together the landscapes of the Sierra de Huétor Nature Park with historic buildings, hiking trails and a cycling route. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on a longer cycling route, a mountain summit or the history of the town. These highlights give your search for a hotel in Huétor - Santillán a clear connection to the destination.

Nature Park and Trails around Huétor Santillán

The Sierra de Huétor Nature Park was designated on July 28, 1989; Huétor Santillán is one of the park's municipalities. The Majalijar hiking trail leads to the 1,878-meter-high summit of Majalijar, the highest mountain in the nature park. From there, views extend across large parts of the park and to the neighboring Sierra Arana. Booted eagles, golden eagles or griffon vultures may be spotted there.

The Huétor Santillán–Prado Negro cycling route starts in the town center, is more than 55 kilometers long and passes through characteristic woodland landscapes in the heart of the nature park. Its described profile therefore differs from that of the Majalijar hiking trail: here, the notable features are the route length and woodland landscape; there, the summit and views. The Las Mimbres hiking trail offers another focus. It follows the Acequia de Fardes through various Mediterranean vegetation zones. Willows grow along the trail and were traditionally used by local craftspeople.

To reach the starting point of the Cañada del Sereno hiking trail, drive from Granada on the A-92 toward Guadix as far as the Parque Natural Sierra de Huétor exit. After crossing a bridge, continue for about 500 meters to the Los Peñoncillos forest house. Road conditions and access rules can change; check current local information before setting out.

Church, Old Town and the Darro Valley

The parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación, was built in the 16th century and renovated in the 18th century. The church contains an elaborate Mudéjar wooden ceiling and several 18th-century sculptures. The original construction and later renovation provide a historical timeline; the sculptures also date from the 18th century.

The Old Town is characterized by narrow streets and an urban layout described as typically Muslim. At the entrance to the Old Town, in Colonia del Río, an original bridge spans the Darro. The church, urban layout and bridge offer different points of interest if you are interested in architectural history and the townscape.

The Darro Valley stretches from the river's source area in Huétor Santillán to the urban area of Granada. It contains traces of settlement by various civilizations from Roman times to the present and lies partly within the municipality of Huétor Santillán. As cultural heritage of special interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC), it is protected in the Zona Patrimonial category.

Local Events and Cheese-Making Tradition

At the beginning of August, Huétor Santillán celebrates its patron saint festivities in honor of San Sebastián. The Quesos La Vieja Buchaca cheese dairy was founded in Huétor Santillán. It offers tours of its production facilities and tastings of its products. If you plan to take a tour or attend a tasting, check availability in advance.
