Discover Lobras: Village Character, Heritage and Trails
Accommodation in Lobras
Lobras can be explored through several themes: its Moorish layout shapes the village, its church and museums offer insights into different chapters of its history, and trails lead through a terraced cultural landscape. When planning your trip, you can choose destinations based on whether you want to focus on architecture, music, mining history or a specific hiking route.
Village Character and Church
In Lobras, the houses cluster around the church and the square. Narrow streets, white houses, flowers and flowerpots shape the villageâs character. The Iglesia Parroquial de San AgustĂn is located at the entrance to the village. Admission to the church is free; check this information before your visit. The church is listed in the Patrimonio Inmueble de AndalucĂa. In the present-day Iglesia Parroquial de San AgustĂn, the tower is the oldest element; it adjoins the small main chapel.
Music and Mining History
Using musical instruments, the Centro de interpretaciĂłn de la MĂșsica Lombarda offers a journey through the sounds of the world. It displays instruments from the âEl viaje de LĂșaâ collection. Both the instruments and the musical impressions from different parts of the world take centre stage.
The Museo del Malacate in TĂmar explores a different historical theme. Its account of regional mercury mining spans the extraction of cinnabar through to the operation of the factories. It also covers ethnological traditions: weaving, silkworm farming, traditional songs and agricultural tools. A prior appointment is required to visit the museum. Arrange your appointment in advance and confirm it before travelling.
Heritage and Landscape
The Acequia de TĂmar-Lobras is protected as a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural (BIC). The values underpinning this designation include historical, ethnological and natural aspects. The Minas RodrĂguez-Acosta in Lobras have also been included in a BIC declaration as a montane industrial heritage area; the mines are inactive.
At Peñón HundĂo, terraced farmland meets very old traces of pottery and settlement that may date back to the Middle Ages. Piedra Amarilla is associated with ibex, birds of prey and climbers. These two landscape themes have different emphases: one is about terraces and possible early settlement, the other about wildlife and climbing.
Trails and Hiking Routes
The GR-7 E4 reaches Lobras from CĂĄdiar and then continues through almond and olive terraces to TĂmar. TĂmar is about 40 minutes from Lobras. The GR-142 Senda de La Alpujarra offers a different choice of direction: head east to CĂĄdiar or west to Nieles. The routes can thus be distinguished by their stated destinations without treating their route profiles as equivalent.
The Camino Viejo between Juviles and TĂmar is about 3.5 kilometres long and paved for much of its length. Current trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out. The Acequia de los Castaños trail is about 2.4 kilometres long and takes approximately 40 minutes. As route information can also change, it is advisable to check locally.
San Marcos and Local Cuisine
The San Marcos festival on 25 April includes a communal meal in the countryside. It features salchichĂłn from the home slaughter, hornazo, olives seasoned with dried tomatoes and wine from the local harvest. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the date before travelling.
