Mecina-Bombarón lies on the foothills of the Sierra Nevada at an altitude of about 1,230 metres. The themes of a stay include trails through mountain landscapes, historic buildings, photography, and recurring festivals. When choosing a destination, you can weigh these highlights according to whether you are more interested in nature trails, architectural history, or celebrations.

Landscape and Hiking Trails

The trails pass through dense woodland and centuries-old chestnut trees. Paths alongside the irrigation channels lead past gorges with clear water and springs with acidic water. Forests and chestnut trees, as well as waterways, are among the landscape features you may encounter while hiking.

The Sulayr GR-240 can be reached from Mecina-Bombarón on foot or via forest roads. Check local conditions before setting out. One route runs for 5 km through the Sierra landscape. A hiking trail connects Mecina-Bombarón and Yegen via the Camino Real de las Hoyas and crosses a Roman bridge. A hiking trail starts in the upper part of Mecina-Bombarón, in the Plaza Vieja district.

Architectural History and Culture

The parish church of San Miguel Arcangel dates from the mid-18th century. It has a rectangular floor plan, round arches, and a pitched roof covered with Arab tiles. Mecina-Bombarón also preserves the old bridge on the Camino Real, which connected Almería and Granada. Its Roman origins are attributed to it in part.

Rafael Vilchez’s permanent photography exhibition focuses on everyday life in the Alpujarra and is located in the lower rooms of the town hall. It shifts the focus from historic buildings to images of everyday life in the Alpujarra. The municipal project “El Pueblo Libro” connects Mecina-Bombarón, Yegen, El Golco, and Montenegro through literary features such as murals, book fountains, and literature-inspired hiking trails. Individual installations may change. The exhibition uses photography, while “El Pueblo Libro” uses literary features. The two cultural forms thus differ in their medium; the project connects several places, while the exhibition is located in the lower rooms of the town hall.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The patron saint festivities of San Miguel take place on September 29 and 30. As part of the celebrations, visitors are invited to enjoy migas alpujarreñas with grilled sardines. Details of the annual programme may vary.

The Fiesta de las Castañas takes place on November 1; its present-day form dates back to 1986. The festival includes roasting chestnuts, as well as singing and dancing. Programme details may vary here, too. The two festival dates mark different autumn highlights: San Miguel in late September and the Fiesta de las Castañas on November 1.
