For a stay in Nigüelas, two themes can be considered separately: the geological significance of the Falla and the town’s architectural and festival culture. The Falla draws attention to a specific geological formation; churches, historic buildings and gardens offer a different perspective. When planning, you can decide whether landscapes, architecture or cultural events should take priority.

Geology and Views

The Falla de Nigüelas Natural Monument is a protected geological site in Nigüelas. It is part of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and the Sierra Nevada SAC and SPA. At the Falla, the fault plane, its dip and the extent of the displacement are clearly visible. This lets you observe three related geological features: the plane, its angle and the displacement. The natural monument has information panels; their condition may change.

For a different perspective, the Mirador de Rasuela offers views of the Lecrín Valley, the Sierra Nevada and the deep gorge of the Río Torrente. While the Falla focuses on a specific geological phenomenon, the viewpoint takes in several named landscape features. The two offer different points of reference for planning: the visible structure of a fault or views of a valley, mountain range and gorge.

Buildings, Gardens and the Former Olive Oil Mill

The Mudéjar-style Church of San Juan Bautista contains magnificent sculptures of Granada’s religious art. The parish church of Nigüelas dates from the 16th century. At the Casa de los Zayas, a Renaissance portal and gardens in the style of French Romanticism are among its defining features. The Jardín de los Muller, next to the Palacio de los Zayas, combines an orchard and a garden. These examples highlight different features: sculptures, a specific century, a portal and a landscaped green space.

The town’s history of past uses is another visitor attraction: the Almazara de Las Laerillas is a former olive oil mill that can be visited. Check local opening arrangements before your visit. The history of the mill adds another aspect of the town to the impressions offered by its churches, architecture and gardens.

Festivals and Music

Cultural events may also be important when planning your trip. The patron saint festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias take place in Nigüelas during the third week of September; check the programme locally. Several music competitions and concerts take place throughout the year, although the specific programme may vary. The Entierro de la Zorra has been maintained for decades as the closing event and highlight of the festivities.

The dates offer different points of reference: a festival in the third week of September and musical events throughout the year. If a particular festival or concert is a deciding factor for your trip, check the relevant event dates when planning. Geology and architecture are not the only considerations when choosing when to stay; the town’s documented festival and musical traditions are interests in their own right.
