Orce brings together several distinct reasons to visit: archaeological evidence, a visitor centre dedicated to prehistory, the Fuencaliente thermal spring and recurring events. If you are looking for a hotel in Orce, first consider whether settlement history, the thermal spring or an event date is your main priority. These different highlights offer practical starting points for planning your trip.

Archaeological evidence and a long history of settlement

The Cuenca de Orce is listed as an archaeological zone within the municipality of Orce, with the protected status of Bien de Interés Cultural, in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage. The zone includes numerous sites that provide important insights into the context of the first spread of hominins beyond Africa. The archaeological story therefore extends beyond individual findspots and encompasses the area's broader prehistory.

The prehistoric settlement of Cerro de la Virgen includes a sequence spanning the Copper Age and Bronze Age, followed by later Roman, Byzantine and medieval settlement phases. Four wall sections, a Copper Age water channel and numerous residential structures have been preserved at the site. The chronological sequence provides an overview of the different settlement phases, while the structures listed here identify specific architectural remains. This makes it possible to understand the site both through its long history and through individual archaeological findings.

Prehistory at the visitor centre

The Centro de Interpretación Primeros Pobladores de Europa “José Gibert” offers a journey 1.5 million years into the past. It also shows what the climate, flora and exotic fauna of the Granada Geopark were like. Its focus therefore extends beyond archaeological finds to include the environment of the time.

The centre offers guided tours for tourist and school groups. Confirm the practical arrangements before your arrival. An interpretation centre in a cave house is dedicated to the life and work of the German archaeologist Wilhem SchĂĽlle.

Fuencaliente: thermal spring and recreation area

Fuencaliente is a thermal spring in the floodplain of the Río Orce. Its water emerges year-round at a constant temperature of 21 °C. The spring has been developed into a public swimming pool with gardens and a recreation area. The visitor experience thus includes both the natural spring and the developed facilities.

Fuencaliente is open year-round, and admission is free. As the facilities may be maintained or modified seasonally, check their current condition before your visit. The temperature of the spring water and the developed areas are separate aspects: the constant water temperature describes the spring, while the swimming pool, gardens and recreation area are features of the developed site.

Events as a reason to visit

The calendar information for the Mercado Medieval is especially specific: since it was established in 1999, the market has taken place every year on the first Sunday in August. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the event date and the programme for the year in question in advance.

The Feria EcolĂłgica del Altiplano also takes place in Orce every year. It brings together farmers, livestock breeders, local producers, institutions and visitors. The programme for the 2025 edition included tastings of traditional tomato varieties and a large market for organic products. These activities give the event a clear connection to agriculture and food.

The different themes let you choose the focus of your stay: the archaeological evidence and visitor centre turn attention to prehistory and the development of settlements, while Fuencaliente offers a thermal spring with a developed recreation area. Events add fixed dates throughout the year to these options. When choosing when to travel, you can therefore consider whether you are more interested in historical themes, the thermal spring or a market and event day.
