Discover Pinos del Valle
Accommodation in Pinos Del Valle
If you are looking for a hotel in Pinos del Valle, its cultural and scenic landmarks can help you decide whether it is the right destination. The Iglesia de la Inmaculada and the Iglesia de la Concepción represent different aspects of the townscape; there are also the Fiestas de San Roque, tulle embroidery and views of the Béznar Reservoir. This gives you a basis for weighing up whether church architecture, a festival tradition, textile craftsmanship or scenery is the deciding factor for your trip.
Churches and architecture
The Iglesia de la Inmaculada in Barrio Bajo was built between 1561 and 1566. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross, and the church also has a barrel vault. The first term describes the cross-shaped layout of the floor plan; the second refers to a vaulted ceiling that runs lengthwise. These are two distinct architectural features: the layout of the floor plan and the shape of the vaulting.
The furnishings include a Neoclassical-style tabernacle and polychrome carvings from the schools of Mena and Martínez Montañés. The construction period, spatial layout and stylistic description of the furnishings together help place the church in context. The Iglesia de la Concepción is also part of the town’s architectural character: under Decree 16/2004 of 27 January 2004, it was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.
Festival traditions and tulle embroidery
The Fiestas de San Roque are celebrated on 16 August in honour of the town’s patron saint, San Roque. The well-known Revoloteo de la Bandera takes place in both parts of town, Barrio Alto and Barrio Bajo. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the programme for your chosen year.
Tulle embroidery is another local tradition. Since the 1920s, several generations of women in Pinos del Valle have embroidered mantillas and veils at home using needle lace on tulle. The traditional technique used silk threads on black or white tulle; motifs include leaves, lace and openwork. The materials, technique and patterns give this craft a distinct focus alongside church architecture and festival events.
Location and views
Pinos del Valle is situated at an elevated position above the Béznar Dam. The village district of Las Eras offers views of the reservoir. The town’s elevated location and the reservoir view specifically associated with Las Eras are two separate points of interest for those drawn to the scenery.
A secondary road connects Pinos del Valle with Motril and offers very fine views. This scenic feature belongs to the road connection, while the reservoir view is associated with a particular village district. If you take the scenery into account when choosing your destination, you can distinguish between these two perspectives: the view of the reservoir from Las Eras and the scenic route to Motril.
