Explore Pulianas through its cultural history, religious buildings and festive traditions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Pulianas, you can consider which of these aspects interests you most when choosing your destination: historic sites, cultural events or customs associated with particular festive occasions.

History and buildings

The origins of Pulianas date back to Roman times. Archaeological remains of agricultural villas near Granada point to this early period. The Nasrid era offers another historical perspective: at that time, Pulianas supplied Granada with food and experienced economic growth from the mid-15th century onward. Thus, archaeological traces are part of the town’s history, as is its former role in supplying Granada.

The church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is in Pulianillas. It dates back to a former monastery built in 1531; the present-day complex is called Huerto de San Antón. An old mill has also been preserved there. The parish church of San José dates from the 18th century and has a magnificent altarpiece. It houses the images of the Virgen de los Dolores, Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and the Virgen del Rosario. They are carried in the corresponding processions on Good Friday and during the patron saint festivities in August, respectively. The two churches therefore bring together different architectural histories and religious traditions.

The Vía Crucis is also an important part of the town’s religious heritage. Numerous stone crosses stand around the town centre; more crosses and bas-reliefs can be found on building façades. The Vía Crucis was observed during Holy Week. A group of three stone crosses dating from the 16th century stands on the Camino Viejo. Jesus Christ is carved into the middle cross; the people of Pulianas venerate this Cristo de la Era.

Culture and festive traditions

The Casa de la Cultura “Maestro Dióscoro Galindo” is a cultural venue for theatre, music, conferences, cinema, exhibitions and workshops. It is named after Dióscoro Galindo, a former teacher in Pulianas. He was killed during the Spanish Civil War alongside the Granada-born poet Federico García Lorca. The cultural venue is another point of reference for Pulianas’ cultural history, alongside the churches and the Vía Crucis.

Festivities are held in Pulianas on the third weekend of August. A procession takes place on either Saturday or Sunday, alternating between the image of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and that of the Rosario. The procession schedule may vary, so it’s a good idea to check the specific dates and programme in advance when planning for this festive period.

A report from the Archdiocese dated 2 February 2024 describes the Candelaria festival, which features a traditional bonfire where Saladillas, ham and wine are shared. At the end, after the procession, traditional Roscas are handed out. Unlike the August processions, this celebration centres on sharing food around the bonfire. The Vía Crucis, in turn, is associated with Holy Week. The customs described therefore differ both in their religious associations and in how they are observed.

Landscape and getting there

The landscape also offers a marked contrast within the town: the north and northwest of Pulianas are characterised by gentle hills and low elevations on the slopes of the Sierras de Alfacar, Víznar and de la Yedra. By contrast, the south and southwest are almost flat, with only gentle slopes. These differences give a brief impression of how varied the landscape is in different directions.
