Discover Cartaya: pine forests, marshland and historic sites
Accommodation in Cartaya
Cartaya offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: pine forest landscapes and walking trails, marshland and water activities, as well as historic buildings and events. If you’re looking for a hotel in Cartaya, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The places and details below offer practical guidance.
Pine forests and trails
The Pinares de Cartaya cover approximately 11,500 hectares and are of ecological and scenic value. The landscape includes Mediterranean vegetation, birdlife and small vertebrates. The pine forests have walking trails, picnic spots and recreational areas, so you can combine time in nature with outdoor activities during your stay.
One specific walking option is the Sendero Marismas de San Miguel. The trail is 1,720 metres long, has a low level of difficulty and takes around 52 minutes. It passes through marshland with vegetation that tolerates salt and flooding. You can also watch birds there. Its length and approximate duration can help you fit the walk into your daily plans.
The initial section of the Sendero Río Piedras has been adapted for people with reduced mobility. This section has four rest areas with benches; check the conditions before your trip. Please also note that the Río Piedras trail is for pedestrians only; bicycles and motor vehicles are prohibited.
Marshland, river and beach
The Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha del Rompido are located at the mouth of the Río Piedras. The protected area includes tidal flats and marshland, as well as a sandy coastal formation approximately ten kilometres long. It is protected as an Andalusian wetland, a Paraje Natural, an LIC and a ZEPA. Activities available in the area include water sports, river trips, sport fishing, diving courses and windsurfing.
Playa Nuevo Portil in Cartaya offers a different landscape: it stretches for 1,500 metres below cliffs and has calm waters. If you’re comparing natural and waterside landscapes, you can consider both the marshes at the river mouth and a stretch of beach with its own distinctive coastal form.
Cartaya’s architectural history
Castillo de los Zúñiga stands in the centre of the town and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1985. Its architecture includes seven square towers; its walls are eight metres high and 130 metres long in total. The castle is used for festivals, performances and civic events. The programme may change.
Iglesia parroquial de San Pedro was built between 1575 and 1606 and is one of the notable Renaissance churches of western Andalusia. The church also houses a collection of 18th-century scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Casa Consistorial is located on Plaza Redonda, regarded as Cartaya’s civic and representative centre. The original building, known as Casas Capitulares, was built in 1555 over the Pósito de los Pobres. This brings together, within a small area, the history of a municipal building and the square’s role in town life.
The Convento de Mercedarios Descalzos de la Santísima Trinidad is listed in Cartaya as a Monumento and a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its church or chapel is the oldest part of the complex and was built between 1624 and 1628. The new convent building was constructed between 1774 and 1778.
Lighthouse, exhibitions and fair
The old lighthouse of the Faros de El Rompido was built in 1861 to a design by Ángel Mayo. The Centro de Interpretación El Faro tells the story of fishing in the municipality of Cartaya. It also displays the old lighthouse’s lens and information about the watchtowers of Huelva Province. Other topics include the region’s protected marshes, wetlands and birds, as well as Cartaya’s pine forests. Exhibition content may be updated.
The Feria de Octubre takes place each autumn in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, Cartaya’s patron saint. Its first edition was held in 1964. The five-day programme includes exhibitions on livestock farming, agriculture, automobiles and trade; individual programme details may change. If attending the fair is important to your trip, check the latest event dates.
