Discover Cortegana: Castle, Mudéjar and Nature
Accommodation in Cortegana
Cortegana combines historic buildings with walking routes through the town and varied landscapes across the municipality. The castle and the Iglesia del Divino Salvador give its cultural character a distinct profile; different routes each offer a different focus—from panoramic views to the history of water use. Ceramics and regional specialties are also among the themes that can shape a stay.
Castle, church and medieval culture
The Castillo Medieval de Cortegana is a historic monument protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Junta de Andalucía recognized it as such on June 29, 1985. Much suggests that it dates back to the 13th century. Today, the castle is a tourist attraction used mainly for cultural purposes. These include the Jornadas Culturales organized by the Asociación Amigos del Castillo de Cortegana and the Jornadas Medievales.
The Jornadas Medievales take place in the cultural heritage complex comprising the Castillo Medieval de Cortegana, its surroundings and the Iglesia Parroquial del Divino Salvador. The program includes street theater and music, tournaments, exhibitions, and hands-on workshops and demonstrations. Concerts, a medieval dinner and games for children are also among the activities. The Iglesia del Divino Salvador itself dates back to the 14th century and was built in the Mudéjar style. This means two different historical dates are associated with the sites: the church dates back to the 14th century, while the castle is thought to date back to the 13th century.
Walks with different perspectives
The Ruta de los Miradores offers panoramic views of the townscape and surrounding natural landscape from viewpoints across the municipality. The Ruta Monumental is a walking route through Cortegana’s most important cultural heritage sites, focusing on their monumental, historical, artistic and architectural value. The two routes explore the town from different perspectives: one foregrounds views of the town and landscape, while the other focuses on its cultural heritage.
Those interested in the historical significance of water will find a different focus on the Ruta de la Arquitectura del Agua. It includes several springs in Cortegana and explores the importance of water use in the development of the municipality. The Ruta de la Fotografía, meanwhile, leads to various places offering distinctive views of Cortegana and some of its most important cultural heritage sites. It is therefore not the same as the Ruta de los Miradores: this route focuses on selected views of the town and its cultural heritage.
Landscapes across the municipality
The Río Chanza rises in the western part of the municipality of Cortegana. It flows from east to west at the foot of the Picos de Aroche and Sierra Pelada. Cortegana’s landscapes include grazing land with holm and cork oaks, as well as chestnut groves. These are among the characteristic landscapes of the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche.
The municipality also includes the Zona Especial de Conservación (ZEC) and the Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA) of Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. Together with the information about the river, mountain ranges and vegetation, these areas reveal the landscape’s different facets: water, managed land and protected natural areas sit alongside the town’s historic attractions.
Ceramics and specialties
At Alfar Peñalta in Cortegana, ceramics are still made using the “la cuchara” decorative technique. Geometric glaze patterns are applied to the vessels using a spoon. This makes the technique easy to understand even without prior knowledge: it is distinguished not only by its geometric pattern, but also by the particular way the glaze is applied.
Cortegana’s characteristic culinary specialties include goat’s cheese, both aged and fresh, as well as the well-known Quesadas. Ceramics and cuisine complement the historical and landscape themes with crafts and culinary experiences. A stay in Cortegana can therefore appeal to different interests without limiting the destination to a single attraction or activity.
