When looking for a hotel in Encinasola, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on: border history, river landscapes or festival traditions. The buildings, landscapes and events each give your stay a different theme.

Border History and Buildings

Puente de Los Cabriles is a bridge dating from the 15th century. In the past, it connected Encinasola with the border area of Las Contiendas. Fuerte de San Felipe offers a different historical and architectural perspective: the round artillery tower was built east of the town centre between 1645 and 1650. Its external diameter is 14 metres. Together, the two structures illustrate different chapters of local border history—a former connection to the border area and a 17th-century fortification.

Fuerte de San Juan is a town fortification that protected Encinasola from Portuguese incursions. Today, it houses a permanent exhibition about La Contienda, its distinctive buildings and the tools used there. At Castillo de Encinasola, the focus is on the defensive context: together with the castles of Aroche and Fregenal de la Sierra in Badajoz, it formed the first defensive line. Encinasola is therefore home both to historic architectural styles and to an exhibition about the landscape and its buildings.

River Landscapes and Routes

A riparian forest grows along the river near Puente de Los Cabriles. Ash, poplar, black poplar, willow and white eucalyptus trees provide shade and shelter for numerous birds, reptiles and small mammals. In the valley of the Río Múrtigas, the largest accumulation of water along the river lies by an old mill dam, amid a landscape of exceptional ecological value. The river, vegetation and historic mill dam each describe a different aspect of the same landscape.

The Sendero del Puente de Los Cabriles starts at the southern edge of Encinasola, via Calle del Conde. For its first few metres, it runs roughly parallel to the HU-9103 road towards Cumbres de San Bartolomé. These details help pinpoint the start and initial direction; they do not describe the rest of the trail.

There are numerous and varied routes for horse riding, cycling, mountain biking and hiking around Encinasola. They pass through the landscape of the Parque Natural de Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. The choice of activities is an aspect to consider when planning a trip, alongside the historic buildings and festivals. The description of the Sendero del Puente de Los Cabriles gives a specific starting point and direction, while the other activities are presented as a broad range of options around Encinasola.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The Romería de la Virgen de Flores begins on the Friday after Easter Sunday and lasts until the following Monday, known as Lunes de Albillo. At the end of the romería, the image is taken to its pilgrimage chapel at around 10 a.m.; the chapel is 9 kilometres from the town. Tambourines, floats, carts and horses accompany the procession, which stops at Piedra de los Valientes. The start and duration are tied to Easter, while the procession at the end of the romería follows its own itinerary.

The Ruta del Contrabandista is a route of about 16 kilometres connecting the Portuguese town of Barrancos with Encinasola during the Festividad de San Andrés. On their return, hikers and local residents can sample the traditional Migas de San Andrés in Plaza Mayor. Over the course of a weekend, the festival brings together cultural, sporting, religious and gastronomic events, as well as a craft fair in the festival tent in Plaza Mayor.

If you are travelling for a festival, it is worth checking the dates for the year in question. The romería is held around Easter, while the Festividad de San Andrés brings its events together over a weekend. This lets you plan the timing around each occasion, rather than treating the two festivals as interchangeable dates.
